  • Publication number: 20080102867
Abstract: A system node, and method in a radio telecommunication network for efficiently serving non-compliant mobile terminals (UE/MSs) and core network (CN) nodes without negatively affecting features available to compliant UE/MSs and nodes. A network service node such as an SGSN sends a standardized message to a UE/MS or CN node a reduced number of times while awaiting a response. If a proper response is not received, the SGSN removes “known problem” optional and/or conditional information elements from the message and sends an altered message to the UE/MS or CN node one or more times while awaiting a response. If the UE/MS or CN node responds to the altered message, it receives service with a reduced feature set. The SGSN may store an ID of the UE/MS or CN node in a list of non-compliant UE/MSs or CN nodes. In future sessions, the SGSN may send only the altered message to the UE/MS or CN node.

  • Patent number: 7180860
Abstract: A method for the provision of a defined quality of service in a packet switched communication system with interconnected nodes (N) for the forwarding of data packets is described. The system comprises at least one edge node (EN) for the connection to user equipment (UE) or a further communication system (FS) and for processing data packets. The packets comprise a data field (10) specifying the handling of the packets and the nodes (N) perform a differentiated handling of packets according to said data field (10). The communication system comprises or is connectable to a data base (DB) which contains a record for a user specifying a quality of service. An edge node (EN) which processes a packet for said user is provided with quality parameters from the data base (DB). The edge node (EN) sets the data field (10) specifying the handling of the packet according to the record. Devices and programs to perform the method are also described.

  • Patent number: 7031286
Abstract: The invention relates to a mobile LAN including a number of hosts interconnected by a communication media. Routing means and a mobile station is connected to the LAN. A host on the LAN may perform a packet data communication with an external host via the routing means and the mobile station. Translation means is connected to the routing means for the temporary translation of a locally defined network layer address assigned to a host on the LAN into a globally defined network layer address when the host on the LAN performs a packet data communication with an external host.

  • Patent number: 6853648
Abstract: Communication is enabled between a first network in which control functions and user functions are combined in a first node and a second network in which user functions are implemented in a second node, and control functions are implemented in a third node. A determination is made whether data received contains control data. If so the control data is extracted from the received data and is forwarded to the third-node in which control functions are handled. The control data is used for resource handling. The extraction and forwarding may be performed in the first, second, or third node, or at any surface in between. If the received data does not contain control data, the data will be forwarded to the second node. The first network may be a second generation data packet network, e.g., a Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, and the second network may be a third generation packet data network., e.g., a Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) network.

  • Patent number: 6683853
Abstract: A system and method for allocating system resources to provide a selected quality of service in connection with data communications. A mobile user station requests a first quality of service level for a data communication session. In response to a determination that system resources for providing the first quality of service level are unavailable, the system assigns resources for providing a second quality of service level for the data communication session. Thereafter, during the communication session, the system monitors the availability of system resources. If system resources for providing the first quality of service level become available, the system allocates the system resources for use by the user station and upgrades or downgrades the communication session accordingly.

  • Patent number: 6473422
Abstract: A communications network and method for screening incoming circuit switched calls directed to a mobile terminal operating in packet switched mode. The communications network includes a circuit switched network and a packet switched network. A called party uses the mobile terminal to transmit to the packet switched network a screening list containing at least one listed phone number. The packet switched network uses the screening list to inform the called party whenever an incoming circuit switched call of a calling party has a phone number matching anyone of the listed phone numbers.

  • Patent number: 6438383
Abstract: A cellular communication system supporting packet data communication includes a number of switching arrangements for switching speech and/or circuit switched data. It also includes a number of packet data nodes, each controlling/serving the packet data communication in a number of packet paging areas. In each cell, a number of packet data communication channel resources are used for packet data communication, and each packet data node includes mobile station information handling devices keeping information about mobile stations registered in the cells covered by the packet data node. Cell information handling devices are further provided keeping information about packet data communication channel resources in the cells covered by the packet data node. Devices are provided for calculating which packet data communication channels are to be used for mobile stations after updating of a cell. Furthermore, devices are provided for keeping information about which cells have been updated and when a cell is updated.

  • Patent number: 6334185
Abstract: A system and method for encrypting transmissions between a plurality of communication nodes and a mobile station, wherein the algorithm for generating an encryption key resides within a first communications node. A second communications node requiring encryption between the node and a mobile station requests an encryption key from the first communications node through a PMAP interface interconnecting the nodes. The first node generates the encryption key and a countersign and transmits them back to the second communications node. The transmitted countersign is compared with a countersign provided by the mobile station, and if they match, transmissions from the second communications node to the mobile station are encrypted using the provided key.

  • Patent number: 5930705
Abstract: A communication system and a method exchange signals between a public telecommunication network and at least one communication arrangement via the communication system. The communication system comprises a network adapter unit comprising a first signal port which is connectable to the public telecommunication network and a second signal port. The communication further comprises at least one subscriber adapter unit comprising a third signal port for the exchange of signals with the second signal port and a fourth signal port which is connectable to the communication arrangement. The subscriber adapter unit is arranged to initiate a communication session in response to a connection signal. The network adapter unit is arranged to produce a completion message at the network adapter unit in response to reception, on the first signal port, of a disconnection signal from the public telecommunication network.
