  • Patent number: 4740384
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for applying two or more colors of paint by applying a first paint to at least part of a substrate, followed by a second and, if desired, further different-colored paints to different parts of the substrate and hardening the applied coats of paint by baking, which comprises applying the second and if desired the further different-colored paints without interim baking of the first paint to the preselected different parts of the substrate using electrostatic atomization at stationary atomizer edges involving transport of the paint particles in an electric field and, after the first and subsequent paints have been applied, hardening all coats of paint together by baking.

  • Patent number: 4535874
Abstract: A brake lining carrier has a base plate one side of which can be detachably mounted on a brake lining support member and on the other side thereof is a layer of resilient material upon which are positioned a plurality of brake lining elements disposed to define a friction braking surface. A frame is provided on the edge portion of the base plate to enclose the brake lining elements. Each brake lining element is mounted upon a carrier plate which has projecting flange portions on two longitudinal sides of the brake lining element. The flange portions on the outer longitudinal sides are received within a groove formed in the frame and the flange portions on the inner longitudinal side extend into an open central portion of the friction lining block in which there is a clamp exerting a force against the inner flange portions in a direction perpendicular to the friction surface.

  • Patent number: 4265492
Abstract: A braking apparatus for vehicles has a switching device which controls the admission of pressure fluid to the braking cylinder of a service brake and is operated by a reaction force acting upon a coupling or bearing support between the switching device and a lever operatively connected to a parking or locking brake. When this reaction force exceeds a predetermined limit upon operation of the parking brake, the switching device is actuated to release the service brake. The service brake is released at that time when the parking brake already applies a braking force and the short period of time between the parking brake being locked and prior to release of the service brake is so short that the brake linkage of the service brake is not subjected to any damaging effects.

  • Patent number: 4226481
Abstract: A spring-loaded brake device particularly for railway vehicles has a brake valve to control the pressure in a brake line and spring-loaded brake cylinders that can be subjected to the action of pressure in the brake line against the force of a loading spring. At least one venting valve is connected to the brake line and the venting valve comprises a rapid acting valve which is controlled by pressure in the brake line to open a venting passage from the brake line to the atmosphere only when the pressure in the brake line is lowered from a brake release level to a level at which the brake cylinder makes braking contact. This venting passage is otherwise closed. The rapid acting valve thus removes air under pressure from the spring-loaded brake cylinders and flows this air to the atmosphere only at the beginning of a braking operation. Upon further application of the brakes the rapid acting valve has no effect and brake pressure is controlled by the brake valve.

  • Patent number: 4090591
Abstract: A brake shoe has a groove in a support member to receive a dove-tail guide on a brake lining to hold the brake lining on the support member. One longitudinal side of the groove is inclined to define a wedge and the other longitudinal side is straight. Springs are mounted on the support member on the straight side of the groove to extend behind and clamp the brake lining dove-tail guide. Modifications of the groove include inclined sides along only portions of the groove and springs at the straight wall portions of the groove to extend behind and clamp the dove-tail guide of the brake lining.

  • Patent number: 4050553
Abstract: In a brake cylinder there is a reciprocating piston from which extends a non-rotatable sleeve surrounding a co-axial non-rotatable axially displaceable threaded shaft upon which is threaded a coupling nut. A pair of rotary couplings are provided on opposed sides of the coupling nut with the sleeve and the rotary couplings are actuable by axial displacement of the coupling nut. A stop ring is axially displaceable on the coupling nut and is supported opposite to the braking direction by a fixed stop. A spring has one end acting against the stop ring and its other end acting against an abutment on the sleeve. A second stop on the coupling nut is spaced rearwardly of the first stop a distance approximately equal to the contact stroke of the vehicle brake when the resetting device is in the inoperative position.

  • Patent number: 3948571
Abstract: A valve device for controlling pressure medium actuated brakes, particularly for railway vehicles, comprises a multi-stage valve to set one of a plurality of pressure stages. The valve has an axially displaceable stepped piston having a plurality of annular radial surfaces with a predetermined surface area ratio to each other. The surfaces are subjected to the action of pressure medium through control valves separately or in combination in accordance with a selected pressure stage. The piston controls a double valve connected between a source of pressure medium and the brake which is supplied with pressure medium or vented in response to position of the double valve. The radial surfaces of the piston are subjected to a selected stage pressure against a constant force that is independent of the control pressure such that this axially applied force is in balance with the force exerted by the pressure of the pressure medium against the radial surfaces at every braking stage.

  • Patent number: 3948360
Abstract: A switching member positioned approximately in the plane of the brake disk has an actuating element therein which is displaceable radially with respect to the brake disk. The element is resiliently held in a rest position and is engageable by adjustable screws mounted on the ends of arms extending from the brake shoe suspension hangers pivotally mounted on each side of the brake disk. The extending arms are spaced with respect to each other in the peripheral direction of the brake disk. The switching member is connected to a fluid pressure source so that when a push button valve in the fluid pressure line is opened, the fluid pressure will be connected through the switching member to the atmosphere when the wear of the brake lining reaches a predetermined low level. The communication to the atmosphere is achieved by displacing the actuating member a sufficient distance so that a radial bore therein provides communication within the switching element between the source of fluid pressure and the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 3941430
Abstract: In a load-responsive air braking system for a railway vehicle an electrical signal is transmitted from a brake controller actuated by an operator when he intends to apply a braking force. The signal is transmitted to a signal converter consisting of an electromagnet having a movable armature therein which contacts an end of a balance beam with a force corresponding to the electrical signal. The balance beam actuates a double valve which has a vent to the atmosphere and is connected between the braking cylinder and an air reservoir.
