  • Patent number: 4157995
Abstract: An improved paper coating composition containing, per 100 parts by weight of finely divided pigment, from 5 to 25 parts by weight of a copolymer A having a glass transition temperature of from -40.degree. to +50.degree. C. in the form of an aqueous dispersion and from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a high molecular weight polymer B which is obtained by polymerizing water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomers in a water-in-oil emulsion. Papers having improved water resistance are obtained.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 16, 1978
Date of Patent: June 12, 1979
    Assignee: BASF Aktiengesellschaft
    Inventors: Hans-Uwe Schenck, Guenter Hirsch
  • Patent number: 4135043
Abstract: Polymers in powder form are manufactured by polymerizing water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomers, which form hydrophilic polymers, in a powder bed of polymers of water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated compounds in the presence of polymerization initiators and water as an auxiliary liquid, the water being entirely or partially removed from the polymerization zone by evaporation during the polymerization.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4126739
Abstract: Copolymers, having a uniform structure, of cyclic dienes are obtained by heating a mixture of from 35 to 96% by weight of cyclopentadiene, dicyclopentadiene and/or methyldicyclopentadiene, which may or may not be partially replaced by methylcyclopentadiene or tricyclopentadiene or methyltricyclopentadiene, from 1 to 30% by weight of maleic anhydride, maleic acid or a monoalkyl maleate, which maleic acid or maleic acid derivatives may be partially replaced by other .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids or dicarboxylic acids of 3 to 5 carbon atoms, and from 3 to 45% by weight of one or more vinyl-aromatics to 230.degree.-320.degree. C, during which heating the mixture does not remain at from 30.degree. to 230.degree. C for more than 5 hours, and preferably for not more than 2 hours. The copolymers may be used as binders for printing inks and coatings, and as additives in adhesives.

  • Patent number: 4104226
Abstract: Mixtures of high molecular weight polyacrylamides in the form of a water-in-oil polymer dispersion and containing in the inner phase from 99.99 to 95% w/w of a cationic polyacrylamide and from 0.01 to 5% w/w of an anionic polyacrylamide or from 99.99 to 95% w/w of an anionic polyacrylamide and from 0.01 to 5% w/w of a cationic polyacrylamide, all percentages being based on the total amount of polymer. The said polymer mixtures are particularly effective retention aids and flocculants and are preferably used in the manufacture of paper as pulp additives.
