Patent number: 5055154Abstract: A method and an apparatus for fixing members such as labels and foils to bottles wherein cut-to-size members are picked up at pick-up station, glue coated as they are picked up and pressed onto a bottle on their glue coated side. The members are severed from a continuous roll of web material and are individually and successively fed before coating to the pick-up station at the rate at which they are picked-up.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1980Date of Patent: October 8, 1991Inventors: Rudolf Zodrow, Hans-Werner Mohn

Patent number: 4721544Abstract: Wrap-around labels are applied with a hot-melt adhesive in a labelling machine in which upstream of the label box, the containers have the glue or adhesive applied to them by at least one, and preferably two, alternately operable nozzles while the rotary plates on which the containers are mounted are temporarily held stationary. This provides for highly precise gluing and the containers can then be rotated counter to the direction of rotation of the turntable carrying the plates at the label box so that a precise removal of the wrap-around label from the box is effected without allowing glue to accumulate on other labels in the box and impairing the labelling operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1986Date of Patent: January 26, 1988Assignee: Jagenberg AGInventors: Rudolf Zodrow, Wolfgang Rogall, Hans-Werner Mohn

Patent number: 4536247Abstract: There is described an apparatus and a method for the foil-capping of bottles with a patch of metal foil having a point and an adhesive back, comprising(a) adhering each patch to the neck of a bottle by its central area with the upper area of the foil projecting above the bottle neck,(b) applying the laterally projecting patch ends so that they overlap one another,(c) folding down the area of each patch projecting above the bottle neck to the bottle side away from the patch point, and(d) simultaneously pressing down and smoothing the folded down patch area onto the top side and all about the circumferential margin adjacent thereto.A neater tear-free arrangement of the foil about the top and sides of the neck of the bottle results.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1983Date of Patent: August 20, 1985Assignee: Jagenberg AGInventors: Rainer Buchholz, Josef Tomashauser, Rudolf Zodrow, Hans-Werner Mohn

Patent number: 4487650Abstract: The invention concerns a labeling machine for bottles that are to have one or more labels applied to them in a position determined by a specific indication on the bottle. Before the first label is applied, the bottles, which are secured between a rotating plate and a rotating head, are probed for the indication and rotated by an electric motor. The rotation from the motor is introduced through one input of a differential gear. Rotations derived from an invariable labeling program are introduced through the other input. The bottles can accordingly be positioned in the desired orientation without being loosened between the rotating plate and rotating head and without using a frictional clutch or gearshift.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1984Date of Patent: December 11, 1984Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Hans-Werner Mohn, Heinz-J/u/ rgen Rosenberg

Patent number: 4456114Abstract: In a bottle handling machine, a turret for transport of bottles comprising a plurality of turntables arranged in a circle and controlled by cam followers, a plane fixed cam operatively connected to the turret so that as the turret revolves the cam is contacted by the cam followers of the turntables, each follower having a lever arm guided in said cam, movement of said lever arm rotating the associated turntable back and forth, and a gear meshing therewith and joined to said lever arm, the gear joined to each lever arm being disposed between the gears of two adjacent turntables and meshing with said gears. As a result the turret can accommodate more turntables so the machine output is higher.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1981Date of Patent: June 26, 1984Assignee: Jagenberg AGInventor: Hans-Werner Mohn

Patent number: 4388143Abstract: In the affixing of strip label closures across the top and down the sides of a container wherein a strip label is coated with glue, held extended and at right angles to the axis of the container above its top whereby portions of the strip label overhang the top of the container, and the overhanging portions are pressed onto the opposed sides of the container, the improvement which comprises gripping the free ends of the strip label while the label is held extended over the top of the container, guiding the gripped ends over arcuate paths that are in the same plane as the axis of the container directly to the intended points of adhesion on the sides of the container, and thereafter effecting the pressing. A corresponding apparatus is described. Strip labels are thereby affixed more precisely and neatly.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1981Date of Patent: June 14, 1983Assignee: Jagenberg-Werke AGInventors: Rainer Buchholz, Hans-Werner Mohn, Hermann Boms, Rudolf Zodrow

Patent number: 4377432Abstract: In the affixing of neck labels and foils to bottles wherein precut labels and foils are picked up at a station and glue-coated, turned over, and pressed onto the bottles by their glue-coated surfaces, the improvement which comprises feeding each foil and its respective neck label to the pickup station in such a way that during the pickup the lower edge of the foil is covered by the upper edge of the neck label, and pressing both foil and neck label onto the bottle substantially simultaneously in a single operation. An apparatus therefor is provided.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1980Date of Patent: March 22, 1983Assignee: Jagenberg-Werke AGInventors: Rudolf Zodrow, Hans-Werner Mohn

Patent number: 4369089Abstract: In a labelling machine including label pickup means, for delivering to the machine articles to be labelled and for removing from the machine labelled articles, at least two boxes for labels disposed alongside one another, one of said boxes being in active position, means permitting retracting and advancing in label stacking direction of that label box which is in active position, and guide means for the boxes to permit them to move transversely to the direction in which labels are stacked in the boxes so as to take said one box out of active position and to put another box in active position, the improvement wherein said guide means comprises a common support for said boxes, and means mounting said support for rotation about an axis so that said support can be rotated to place any of said boxes or none of said boxes into active labelling position. The support preferably comprises a circular disk rotatable about its center, the label boxes being arranged radially thereon.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1981Date of Patent: January 18, 1983Assignee: Jagenberg-Werke AGInventors: Hans-Werner Mohn, Rudolf Zodrow

Patent number: 4275807Abstract: A support having a plurality of circularly arranged rotatable platforms for bottles includes a drive mechanism having a plane stationary cam plate and sensing elements for each platform in contact with the cam plate. The drive mechanism is mounted in the support and configured such that the same lever arm, sensing element and platform drive shaft can be utilized for both counterclockwise and clockwise rotation of the platform merely by the angular orientation of the drive mechanism with respect to the cam plate.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1979Date of Patent: June 30, 1981Assignee: Jagenberg-Werke AGInventors: Hans-Werner Mohn, Rainer Buchholz, Egon Hoveler, Rudolf Zodrow

Patent number: 4220237Abstract: A bottle carrier for a labeling machine has a plurality of bottle plates which are rotated about their own axes by a drive as the bottle carrier rotates. The drive is controlled by a control arm guided in a fixed cam. Each bottle plate has a drive shaft connected thereto and about which the bottom plate rocks. A socket in the bottle carrier is provided for each drive shaft and a friction wheel drive is disposed between each drive shaft and the corresponding socket. The friction wheel drive includes a cage to which the control arm directly transmits the rocking movements prescribed by the cam.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1978Date of Patent: September 2, 1980Assignee: Jagenberg Werke AktiengesellschaftInventor: Hans-Werner Mohn
