Publication number: 20090275952Abstract: An instrument for distracting and/or compressing adjacent vertebrae is described. The instrument includes a yoke, a first blade movably mounted to the yoke, a second blade mounted to the yoke and an adjustment system. The yoke, the first blade and the second blade form a working channel for the instrument. The adjustment system of the instrument is configured to adjust a spacing between the first blade and the second blade by selectively moving the first blade relative to the second blade to distract and/or compress adjacent vertebrae when the first blade and the second blade have been secured to the adjacent vertebrae. The instrument may include a depth stop system that limits an insertion depth of an associated tool inserted into the working channel of the instrument. The adjustable depth stop system includes a releasable catch for securing a stop element of the associated tool.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2008Publication date: November 5, 2009Applicant: Ranier LimitedInventors: Jonathan Lawson, Scott Johnson, Ernest Corraro, JR., Hanspeter Robert Bayer, Robert H. Publication number: 20090131988Abstract: A bone plate having at least one screw hole adapted to receive a bone screw, a blocker having a blocking end for blocking a bone screw from further backout of bone the blocker being predisposed in a blocking position wherein the blocking end at least partially overlaps a portion of the screw hole, the blocker being moveable from the blocking position by contact with the bone screw during insertion of the bone screw into the screw hole, and a blocker fixation element having an open orientation at which the blocker can move from the blocking position and a closed orientation preventing substantial movement of the blocker from the blocking position. The blocker fixation element cannot be moved to the closed orientation unless the screw head passes the blocker, thereby revealing that the blocker fixation element is in position to prevent substantial movement of the blocker.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 7, 2008Publication date: May 21, 2009Applicant: Stryker SpineInventors: Charles L. Publication number: 20080269638Abstract: Medical instruments and methods of using the instruments are described. In some embodiments, a medical instrument includes a housing, a stylet having a portion in the housing, a movable first member in the housing, the movable member being connected to the stylet, and a second member located in the housing to reduce movement of the first member. The second member is configured to change movement of the first member from a first direction to a second direction different than the first direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 1, 2008Publication date: October 30, 2008Applicant: BOSTON SCIENTIFIC SCIMED, INC.Inventors: David Cooke, Hanspeter Robert Bayer

Publication number: 20070233125Abstract: A screw assembly (10) for insertion into a bone region (12A) (12B) includes a screw body (14) and a washer (16). The screw body (14) includes a distal end (218), a proximal end (224), and a distal threaded area (220), and a proximal threaded area (226). The distal threaded area (220) is positioned near the distal end (218) and the proximal threaded area (226) is positioned near the proximal end (224). The washer (16) includes a washer threaded area (238) that engages the proximal threaded area (226) to selectively secure the washer (16) to the screw body (14). With this design, the washer (16) can be selectively attached to the screw body (14) and different sized washers (16) can be alternatively and selectively secured to the screw body (14). As a result thereof, the person inserting the screw assembly (10) can pick the washer (16) size best suited to retain the bone region (12A) (12B) in which the screw assembly (10) is being inserted.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2007Publication date: October 4, 2007Inventors: Rebecca Hawkins Wahl, Hanspeter Robert Bayer, Ronald George Litke, Scott W. Patent number: 6036710Abstract: An apparatus for forming a non-circular opening in tissue includes an elongate body having a first tissue engaging edge associated with a distal end portion thereof, a punch head disposed adjacent the distal end portion of the elongate body, and defining a second tissue engaging edge associated therewith. The first and second tissue engaging edges each define a general racetrack configuration characterized by first and second opposed straight edge portions interconnected by generally arcuate edge portions. At least one of the first and second tissue engaging edges is adapted to cut tissue. The elongate body and the punch head are adapted for relative movement such that the first and second tissue engaging edges cooperate to cut tissue disposed therebetween to thereby form a general racetrack-shaped opening in tissue.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1997Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: United States SurgicalInventors: Richard A.
