  • Patent number: 8525128
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the inactivation of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses in donor blood, blood plasma and erythrocyte concentrates by photodynamic treatment and/or irradiation with ultraviolet light in flexible irradiation bags under intense movement.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 14, 2012
Date of Patent: September 3, 2013
Assignee: Blutspendedienst der Landesverbande des Deutschen Roten Kreuzes Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thuringen, Oldenburg und Bremen g.G.m.b.H.

  • Patent number: 8173066
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for inactivating pathogens such as bacteria and viruses and/or leucocytes in thrombocyte concentrations by irradiation in flexible containers with ultra-violet light using agitation. The blood product is packaged in a flexible bag to permit the intermixing of the fluid by agitation (tilting, rotation, translation). This is also promoted by the filling of the bag to a maximum 30% of the filling capacity.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 21, 2006
Date of Patent: May 8, 2012

  • Publication number: 20050009913
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for inactivating bacteria and/or leukocytes in thrombocyte suspensions by adding precursor compounds from which photosensitizers are formed by endogenous synthesis, and subsequent photodynamic treatment.
    Type: Application

  • Patent number: 6348309
Abstract: A process for inactivating viruses in blood and blood products in which a phenothiazine dye is added to the blood or blood product, and then irradiated with light. The use of a very small concentration of phenothiazine dye avoids any substantial adverse effects on the blood or blood products. Inactivation of the virus is effected by irradiation of the blood or blood product. After irradiation, the dye can be separated from the blood or blood product by a dye adsorbing agent.

  • Patent number: 5405343
Abstract: The invention is directed to a blood bag system for blood products comprising a bag (3) and at least one tubing (11) connected thereto, the system being made of at least partly transparent plastics material, wherein photoactive substances (31) may be enclosed in a closed-off section (A) of the tubing (11) of the ready-for-use system, which may be handled individually as an independent unit. Every blood bag system of this kind is adapted to be combined with another blood bag system, which may comprise one or several bags (3, 5, 7, 9) and may likewise be handled as an independent unit, by interconnecting both systems.
