Patent number: 10418045Abstract: Many portable playback devices cannot decode and playback encoded audio content having wide bandwidth and wide dynamic range with consistent loudness and intelligibility unless the encoded audio content has been prepared specially for these devices. This problem can be overcome by including with the encoded content some metadata that specifies a suitable dynamic range compression profile by either absolute values or differential values relative to another known compression profile. A playback device may also adaptively apply gain and limiting to the playback audio. Implementations in encoders, in transcoders and in decoders are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2017Date of Patent: September 17, 2019Assignees: Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation, Dolby International ABInventors: Jeffrey Riedmiller, Harald Mundt, Michael Schug, Martin Wolters

Publication number: 20190066708Abstract: There is provided methods and apparatuses for decoding and encoding of audio signals. In particular, a method for decoding includes receiving a waveform-coded signal having a spectral content corresponding to a subset of the frequency range above a cross-over frequency. The waveform-coded signal is interleaved with a parametric high frequency reconstruction of the audio signal above the cross-over frequency. In this way an improved reconstruction of the high frequency bands of the audio signal is achieved.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 24, 2018Publication date: February 28, 2019Applicant: DOLBY INTERNATIONAL ABInventors: Kristofer KJOERLING, Robin THESING, Harald MUNDT, Heiko PURNHAGEN, Karl Jonas ROEDEN

Publication number: 20180130480Abstract: Disclosed are some examples of systems, apparatus, methods and computer program products implementing techniques for extending the range of a set of decoded parameter values for a sequence of frequency bands in an identifiable time frame of an audio signal. In some implementations, the parameter values vary in relation to a sequence of time frames of the audio signal and in relation to a sequence of frequency bands in each time frame. In some implementations, it is determined that a decoded value corresponds to a minimum of a first range of values of a first coding protocol of a set of coding protocols. The determined value is modified to be below the minimum of the first range of values to produce an extended value. A modified set of decoded values including one or more extended values can thus be provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2016Publication date: May 10, 2018Applicant: Dolby International ABInventors: Heiko PURNHAGEN, Per EKSTRAND, Harald MUNDT, Klaus PEICHL

Publication number: 20170301362Abstract: A method for decoding an encoded audio bitstream in an audio processing system is disclosed. The method includes extracting from the encoded audio bitstream a first waveform-coded signal comprising spectral coefficients corresponding to frequencies up to a first cross-over frequency for a time frame and performing parametric decoding at a second cross-over frequency for the time frame to generate a reconstructed signal. The second cross-over frequency is above the first cross-over frequency and the parametric decoding uses reconstruction parameters derived from the encoded audio bitstream to generate the reconstructed signal. The method also includes extracting from the encoded audio bitstream a second waveform-coded signal comprising spectral coefficients corresponding to a subset of frequencies above the first cross-over frequency for the time frame and interleaving the second waveform-coded signal with the reconstructed signal to produce an interleaved signal for the time frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 3, 2017Publication date: October 19, 2017Applicant: DOLBY INTERNATIONAL ABInventors: Kristofer KJOERLING, Heiko PURNHAGEN, Harald MUNDT, Karl Jonas ROEDEN, Leif SEHLSTROM

Patent number: 9779738Abstract: The present document relates to audio encoding/decoding. In particular, the present document relates to a method and system for improving the quality of encoded multi-channel audio signals. An audio encoder configured to encode a multi-channel audio signal according to a total available data-rate is described. The multi-channel audio signal is representable as a basic group (121) of channels for rendering the multi-channel audio signal in accordance to a basic channel configuration, and as an extension group (122) of channels, which—in combination with the basic group (122)—is for rendering the multi-channel audio signal in accordance to an extended channel configuration. The basic channel configuration and the extended channel configuration are different from one another.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2013Date of Patent: October 3, 2017Assignees: Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation, Dolby International ABInventors: Harald Mundt, Jeffrey Riedmiller, Karl J.
