  • Publication number: 20020198292
Abstract: Etherified vinyl alcohol polymers based on partially or completely hydrolyzed vinyl acetate homopolymers or copolymers, containing from 0.1 to 100 mol % of whose vinyl alcohol groups of the formula (I) —CH2-CHR—O—R1, R is H or CH3, and R1 in the etherified vinyl alcohol polymers is identical or different and is unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aryl, or alkaryl radicals each having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, the substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxyl, amine, ammonium, carboxylic acid, carboxylic ester, carboxamide, ether, keto, sulfonic acid, phosphonate, nitrate, and polyoxyalkylene radicals having from 2 to 50 C2-8 oxyalkylene units are useful as thickeners in liquid-containing compositions, particularly hydraulically and non-hydraulically setting construction formulations such as cements, plasters, mortars, adhesives, and renders.

  • Publication number: 20020042459
Abstract: The invention relates to thickeners based on fully or partially hydrolyzed vinyl alcohol copolymers with a molecular weight Mw greater than 100,000, obtainable by hydrolyzing vinyl acetate copolymers which, besides vinyl acetate units, also contain comonomer units which derive from one or more comonomers selected from the group consisting of 1-(C1-5)-alkylvinyl esters of C1-5 carboxylic acids, allyl esters, vinyl esters of alpha-branched C5-12 carboxylic acids, and C1-18-alkyl (meth)acrylates, in the form of their aqueous solution or in powder form.

  • Publication number: 20020040078
Abstract: The invention relates to the use of acetalized vinyl alcohol polymers with a molecular weight Mw greater than 100 000 as thickeners, the thickeners being obtained by acetalizing partially or fully hydrolyzed vinyl acetate homopolymers, or partially or fully hydrolyzed vinyl acetate copolymers which, besides vinyl acetate units, also contain comonomer units which derive from one or more comonomers selected from the group consisting of 1-(C1-5) alkylvinyl esters of C1-5 carboxylic acids, allyl esters, vinyl esters of alpha-branched C1-12 carboxylic acids, and C1-8-alkyl (meth)acrylates.

  • Patent number: 6242512
Abstract: The invention provides a redispersible polymer powder based on a mixture of water-insoluble polymer and a water-soluble atomized protective colloid which can be de-activated through a pH change. In addition, the invention concerns aqueous dispersions that can be prepared with the polymer powder and the use of the polymer powder or its aqueous dispersions as a bonding agent in adhesives, plasters or paints.

  • Patent number: 6187861
Abstract: A process is provided for preparing crosslinkable binders in the form of the aqueous dispersions by polymerizing vinyl ester-olefin copolymers in the presence of protective colloid, which comprises polymerizing vinyl ester-olefin copolymers having a Tg of less than −10° C. by emulsion polymerization in the presence of a protective colloid based on (meth)acrylate polymers comprising from 80 to 95% by weight, based on the overall weight of the polymer, of acrylates or methacrylates of aliphatic alcohols of 1 to 12 carbon atoms and from 5 to 20% by weight, based on the overall weight of the copolymer, of ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acids, the latter copolymer having a glass transition temperature Tg of from 60 to 120° C., and, after the end of polymerization, introducing the crosslinkable groups by reacting the carboxyl groups of the (meth)acrylate polymers with ethylenically unsaturated compounds comprising functions suitable for esterifying the carboxyl group.
