  • Patent number: 4929322
Abstract: A process and apparatus for coating a substrate with source material from a solid cathode in a vacuum chamber supplied with a reactive or inert gas at low pressure. An electric arc is generated between an evaporable end surface of the cathode and an anode. An elongated member surrounds the cathode and extends a predetermined minimum distance "X" beyond the evaporable end surface of the cathode to form a cathode chamber. The inert or reactive gas is directed to flow into the cathode chamber before entering the vacuum chamber.

  • Patent number: 4895765
Abstract: The present invention is directed to polycrystalline titanium nitride and zirconium nitride coating compositions and coated articles with a I(111)/I(200) x-ray diffraction intensity ratio of at least about 75 for the titanium nitride composition and at least about 15 for the zirconium nitride composition and to a method of forming a highly oriented polycrystalline titanium nitride or zirconium nitride coating composition with a high I(111)/I(200) x-ray diffraction intensity ratio. This invention also concerns polycrystalline titanium nitride and zirconium nitride coating compositions and coated articles of the type described with an interplanar spacing, d.sub.111, of 2.460 Angstroms or less for TiN and an interplanar spacing, d.sub.111, of 2.660 Angstroms or less for ZrN and to methods for producing same. The composition is deposited upon a substrate in an evacuated chamber from a titanium or zirconium cathode source surrounded by an elongated member which overhangs the cathode to form a cathode chamber.

  • Patent number: 4839245
Abstract: An erosion resistant article such as a turbine blade having, in use, a surface subject to high angle impingement and a surface subject to low angle impingement, said article comprising a substrate defining said surfaces composed of a refractory metal, titanium alloy, refractory alloy, aluminum alloy, superalloy based on Fe, Co or Ni, stainless steel or ceramic composite, and an erosion-resistant coating of zirconium nitride having an averge grain size of not greater than about 3000 Angstroms applied by physical vapor deposition to said surfaces, said zirconium nitride coating preferably having a ratio of the erosion rate at an impingement angle of 90.degree. to the erosion rate at an impingement angle of 20.degree. of not greater than about 1.5 and having an erosion rate at all impingement angles from 20.degree. to 90.degree. at least about two times less than that of said substrate at the same impingement angles.

  • Patent number: 4485123
Abstract: In a process for providing a coating of different textures on a substrate comprising applying an ultraviolet light curable coating; increasing its viscosity and initiating texturing by exposure to ultraviolet light; maintaining in a dark space to complete texturing; and curing, the improvement comprising providing dark and light colored backgrounds, the former being absorbent to infrared red light and the latter being reflective to infrared red light, and, after increasing the viscosity, using infrared red light to decrease the viscosity over the dark background to a greater extent than the viscosity over the light background.

  • Patent number: 4135098
Abstract: Apparatus for photocuring a coating on a moving substrate in a system including a first and second tunnel with a treating chamber located therebetween and housing at least 1 mercury vapor lamp. The mercury vapor lamp has associated therewith a reflector module for directing UV light to the substrate. The reflector module temperature is controlled by physically spacing a liquid cooled heat sink from the reflector module so that only radiation heat transfer occurs therebetween. The method of the invention comprises controlling the temperature of the reflector surface so that the surface is always at a temperature at least as high as the temperature of the coating to be cured.
