  • Publication number: 20020150874
Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying a module installed in a base from a plurality of different modules and selecting a set of functions corresponding to the installed module. A preferred embodiment is the Intelli-Table™ toy that includes three modules, each of which can be installed into an annular channel in the base. When a module is installed, a unique pattern of recesses or flat surfaces on the bottom of the module is detected by a first set of switches in the channel. Based on the unique state of these switches, the base selects a set of functions corresponding to the installed module. Each module includes a plurality of different movable elements that activate a second set of switches in the base. Moving an element activates a switch, causing the base to perform a function unique to that element and to the module installed.

  • Patent number: 6389815
Abstract: A two-stage fuel nozzle assembly for a gas turbine engine. The primary combustion region is centrally positioned and includes a fuel injector that is surrounded by one or more swirl chambers to provide a fuel air mixture that is ignited to define a first stage combustion zone. A secondary combustion region is provided by an annular housing that surrounds the primary combustion region, and it includes a secondary fuel injector having a radially outwardly directed opening and surrounded by an annular ring that includes openings for providing a swirl chamber for the secondary combustion region. Cooling air is directed angularly between the primary and secondary combustion zones to delay intermixing and thereby allow more complete combustion of the respective zones prior to their coalescing further downstream. The primary combustion region is activated during idle and low engine power conditions and both the primary and secondary combustion regions are activated during high engine power conditions.

  • Patent number: 6317714
Abstract: A communications system that provides bandwidth efficient, bi-directional communications over a single communications channel, allowing a master device to control the operation of remote devices. A computer system continuously provides an audio/video presentation on a speaker and display device. During a first time period, the computer system also provides control and speech data, relevant to the presentation, to a link master controller. The link master controller encodes the control and speech data to reduce bandwidth requirements, and then transmits the encoded data to a remote device. The remote device receives and decodes the encoded data, places the data into a data buffer, and uses the data to control at least one motion servo motor and/or provide data to a speech synthesizer.

  • Patent number: 6182571
Abstract: A method for forming a planographic printing member is disclosed. A hydrophilic layer is formed on a support by contacting the support with a silicate solution that contains a silicate and a particulate material. An image layer is provided over the hydrophilic layer. The hydrophilic layer is treated to ensure that the image layer is able to change color on exposure. The hydrophilic layer may be treated with an acid, with a buffer formulation, with a colloidal suspension, or with a salt. Preferably the hydrophilic layer is treated with aluminum sulphate.

  • Patent number: 6105500
Abstract: A method for preparing a substrate for a planographic printing plate is disclosed. A liquid that contains water; a soluble alkali metal silicate, preferably sodium silicate; and a dispersed particulate material is coated on a substrate, preferably aluminum or an aluminum alloy, to produce a hydrophilic layer on the substrate. A layer of image material may be coated over the substrate to produce a planographic printing plate. In one embodiment the liquid contains a mixture of two particulate materials: alumina and titanium dioxide.

  • Patent number: 6032548
Abstract: A system for providing self-alignment of an appendage or other movable part comprising an input device, a self-aligning clutch, a processor, a feedback sensor, and a timer. The input device drives a set of gears including a partial output gear. The self-aligning clutch is coupled to the output gear and moves the appendage in response to the rotational motion of the output gear. The self-aligning clutch includes a flexible link for transferring energy from the output gear to the appendage and for maintaining the relative alignment between the appendage and the output gear. When an obstruction prevents the appendage from moving to the desired position, the flexible link stores energy. After the obstruction is removed, the flexible link releases the stored energy to move the appendage so that the relative alignment between the output gear and the appendage is maintained. The self-aligning clutch prevents damage to the servo when an external force is applied to the appendage.

  • Patent number: 5313397
Abstract: An autopilot system for a vessel such as a boat receives a pre-set heading direction set by e.g. the user and also receives the apparent orientation (heading) from a heading sensor. The difference between the pre-set heading direction and the actual heading is then determined and a correction signal is generated in dependence on that difference, which correction signal is then used to control the orientation of the vessel by e.g. generating a rudder correction signal which varies the position of the rudder. In the present invention, the correction signal is further dependent on the difference between the actual heading and a reference direction such as magnetic North or South. In this way errors due to differences between the apparent orientation as detected by the heading sensor and the actual orientation of the vessel may be corrected.

  • Patent number: 5235927
Abstract: An autopilot system for a vessel such as a boat has an autopilot unit connected via a drive to the rudder or other direction determining means of the vessel. When the autopilot unit is operating normally, direction information from e.g. a heading sensor is processed by the autopilot unit and the drive is controlled by the autopilot unit to determine the appropriate position of the rudder. The rudder is also linked to a steering wheel or other manual steering arrangement. When the steering wheel is moved during normal operation of the autopilot unit, this causes an interference with the control of the rudder by the drive and, if this interference has sufficient magnitude and duration, this triggers override of the autopilot unit, returning the vessel to manual control via the steering wheel. The override may alternatively be triggered by detection of rudder movement by a sensor.

  • Patent number: 4590679
Abstract: A drive circuit applies an oscillating signal to the drive coil of the fluxgate thereby generating output pulses from the detection coils of the fluxgate, which pulses have an area proportional to the magnetic flux through that coil. The output pulses are integrated sequentially by an integrator. The output may be used directly to obtain the orientation of the fluxgate, and hence of a vessel in which the fluxgate is mounted but it is preferable on the grounds of accuracy and speed of response to apply a predetermined number of pulses from each detection coil, apply a constant signal to the integrator and measure the times between the application of that constant signal and the integrator output attaining a predetermined value. This may be measured digitally giving a more accurate measurement of the fluxgate orientation. Suitable error elimination means may be provided.
