Patents by Inventor Harley V. Piltingsrud

Harley V. Piltingsrud has filed for patents to protect the following inventions. This listing includes patent applications that are pending as well as patents that have already been granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • Patent number: 5345787
Abstract: A miniature cryosorption vacuum pump capable of producing intermediate vacuums on the order of about 10.sup.-2 to 10.sup.-4 torr is provided which includes a closed cycle Stirling cycle refrigerator. The overall weight of the miniature cryosorption vacuum pump (including the refrigerator) is less than about 2.5 kg, making the miniature cryosorption vacuum pump particularly suitable for portable or field use. The miniature cryosorption vacuum pump may be used as a roughing pump in various applications which require intermediate vacuum rough pumping or as a high vacuum pump where low pumping rates are required at pressures down to 5.times.10.sup.-5 torr.

  • Patent number: 5261793
Abstract: A miniature mechanical vacuum pump capable of producing intermediate vacuums on the order of about 10.sup.-1 to 10.sup.-2 Torr is provided by a peristaltic pump. In order to dissipate heat in the pump tubing, a cooling fan provides direct a continuously flow of air onto the pump tubing and pump parts contacting the tubing. The pump produces pressures in the range of about 10.sup.-1 to 10.sup.-2 Torr while consuming only about 17 Watts.

  • Patent number: 4107534
Abstract: A detector probe for a scintillation detection instrument having a photomultiplier within a housing with an europium activated scintillation crystal positioned adjacent the face plate of the photomultiplier. A thin sheet of foil is spaced from the front of the scintillation crystal. The outer surface of the photomultiplier, except for the face plate, and the peripheral surface of the scintillation crystal are coated with a layer of highly reflective paint. The surface of the scintillation crystal facing the aluminum sheet is course ground and the inner surface of an annular spacer between the scintillation crystal and the surface of the aluminum sheet facing the scintillation crystal are coated with a highly reflective paint to provide an air filled light guide diffuser in front of the scintillation crystal. A layer of styrofoam is provided adjacent the aluminum sheet to protect against thermal and mechanical shock.

  • Patent number: 4086489
Abstract: An ultraviolet radiation personnel hazard monitor having a quartz diffuser which receives ultraviolet radiation. The diffused radiation is then passed through an input slit of a dispersive device such as a prism or a diffraction grating. The spatically dispersed radiation is then passed through another mask having a slit which passes a wavelength band between 230 and 320 nanometers. The radiation is then passed through a plurality of interference filters placed side by side and each having bandpass characteristics corresponding to the wavelength bands applied to them. The radiation is then passed through an adjustable parallel slit collimator which corrects the irregular response obtained from the filters and other wavelength response irregularities of the device, to the desired response curve corresponding to the photobiological response curve of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

  • Patent number: 3993950
Abstract: An electrometer for conventional pocket radiation dosimeters is disclosed in which the moving element of the electrometer is a carbon fiber. The fiber is spun from polyacrylonitrile homopolymer yarn and has a diameter of approximately 7 microns before carbonization. The polyacrylonitrile homopolymer fiber is conventionally preoxidized at approximately 270.degree. C before conventional carbonization at approximately 1200.degree. C. The resulting working fiber has a round cross sectional diameter of approximately 4 microns and a modulus of elasticity of approximately 15,000,000 psi. The fiber is mounted in a conventionally loop shaped electrometer frame by crimping the ends of the fiber into tabs on the frame.

  • Patent number: 3950647
Abstract: A plutonium-americium detection instrument having an end window type photomultiplier tube supported in a light weight aluminum housing. An europium activated calcium fluoride scintillation crystal coupled directly to the face plate of the photomultiplier tube with a silicone optical coupling grease. An aluminum window is supported on a styrofoam support and positioned adjacent to said scintillation crystal.
