  • Patent number: 4585583
Abstract: A method is disclosed for encapsulating and solidifying spent ion exchange beads contained in a container to form an ion exchange bed with a solidification resin without the necessity for applying shear in the bed by an external force such as by a mixing impeller. A solidification resin is flowed through the ion exchange bed by plug flow to intermix with and encapsulate each ion exchange bead therein. The resin is cured to form a uniform, solidified monolith of said ion exchange beads in said container. When the ion exchange bed contains free water, the process also effects the removal of substantial portions of the free water and also emulsifies and solidifies free water remaining in the bed.

  • Patent number: 4405512
Abstract: A cured resin system is used to encapsulate certain liquid low level radioactive wastes which are solvents for or are soluble in the uncured resin and which are more soluble in water than in the uncured resin. The process comprises the dilution of said waste with water to an extent that the amount of waste that will partition in the uncured resin system is less than the amount that will retard the cure rate of the system or that will adversely affect physical properties of the cured product, followed by the uniform dispersion of the aqueous solution in said curable resin system after which the resin system is cured to a solid with the aqueous waste solution dispersed therein.

  • Patent number: 4400313
Abstract: An improvement in the process of encapsulating waste materials in aqueous liquid or finely divided, dry solid form, in liquid thermosettable resins of the group consisting of vinyl ester resins, unsaturated polyester resins, and mixtures thereof, which comprises increasing the amount of waste material incorporated in a given amount of resin by adding thereto a water-soluble polymeric substance containing a carbon chain having a plurality of --COOH groups or derivatives thereof.

  • Patent number: 4382026
Abstract: Radioactive organic liquids are converted to a form suitable for burial by the process wherein the liquid is contacted with insoluble, swellable polymer particles to form swollen gelled particles which are dispersed in an unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester resin or mixture thereof which is then cured to a solid state with the gelled particles encased therein.

  • Patent number: 4253985
Abstract: Borate-containing radioactive waste waters are treated by the addition of an alkali metal hydroxide and/or ammonium hydroxide (including non-detrimentally substituted ammonium hydroxides) in an amount effective to prevent precipitation of the borates at temperatures at or near the ambient temperature range, herein meaning about 60.degree. F.-90.degree. F. The invention is ideally practiced in conjunction with the disposal of such wastes by encapsulation wherein an encapsulating binder material or monomer is polymerized in situ with the waste under exothermic reaction conditions.

  • Patent number: 3972820
Abstract: Disclosed is a novel fire extinguishing composition comprising a heat and gas producing pyrotechnic composition comprising a binder and an oxidizer, and having dispersed therein a halogen containing fire extinguishing agent. The pyrotechnic, when ignited, thermally disseminates the fire extinguishing agent onto the fire.

  • Patent number: 3957551
Abstract: Disclosed is a solid propellant composition in the form of a munition which comprises an inorganic acid salt in intimate combination with the reaction product of a carboxyl bearing polymer and a glycidyl thioether. The composition is prepared by mixing the oxidizer, carboxyl containing polymer, and glycidyl thioether and curing the resulting mixture to a coherent grain. Unexpectedly, an excellent cure is achieved in the presence of the oxidizer.
