  • Patent number: 4897232
Abstract: A liquid precursor system for a filament comprises an aluminium halohydrate complex, a magnesium salt and an organic silicate. The stoichiometry is such that a cordierite fibre is formed on firing the filament.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 1, 1988
Date of Patent: January 30, 1990
    Assignee: Clinotherm Limited
Inventors: Harold G. Emblem, Kenneth Jones, Jonathon M. Boulton
  • Patent number: 4810441
Abstract: A ceramic fiber is prepared without the need for a fiber-forming organic polymer or a coagulating bath by forming a homogeneous clear solution from an aluminum halohydrate organic complex dissolved in a mixture of water and a C1-C4 alcohol from which a clear homogeneous precursor filament is drawn and fired, which complex is obtained from an aluminum halohydrate and a polyol containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms and at least 2 hydroxy groups.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 25, 1986
Date of Patent: March 7, 1989
    Assignee: Clinotherm Limited
Inventors: Harold G. Emblem, Kenneth Jones, Jonathan M. Boulton
  • Patent number: 4344753
Abstract: The invention relates to the insulating of furnace walls with a double layer of insulating modules of the type having refractory fibers disposed end on to the oven wall when disposed in place. The modules are first compressed and held that way with easily combustible material and the compression released during the firing of the furnace to destroy the wrapping material. The first layer is preferably non-aligned with the second layer to limit the loss of insulation due to aligned seams.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 1, 1980
Date of Patent: August 17, 1982
    Assignee: Clinotherm Limited
Inventors: Stanley J. Shelley, Harold G. Emblem
  • Patent number: 4324602
Abstract: The invention relates to reducing the thermal inertia of furnace or oven walls. Insulating modules under compression are secured to the wall and released from compression upon firing of the furnace.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 1980
Date of Patent: April 13, 1982
    Assignee: Zirconal Processes Limited
Inventors: Richard P. B. Davis, Harold G. Emblem, Richard D. Shaw, Stanley J. Shelley
  • Patent number: 4211717
Abstract: Ethyl or other lower alkyl silicate is prepared by the direct reaction of alcohol and silicon thereby avoiding the generation of hydrogen chloride as a by-product. The reaction is carried out at elevated temperature in a catalytic solution of high thermal capacity.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 23, 1979
Date of Patent: July 8, 1980
    Assignee: Zirconal Processes Limited
Inventors: Harold G. Emblem, Anup K. Das, Kenneth Jones
  • Patent number: 4205032
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of rigidizing articles of refractory fibres. This is achieved by impregnating the fibre article with a zirconium salt, a gellation-inducing agent and a gellation-delaying agent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 12, 1979
Date of Patent: May 27, 1980
    Assignee: Zirconal Processes Limited
Inventors: Ian R. Walters, Harold G. Emblem
  • Patent number: 4201594
Abstract: The invention concerns the binding of refractory powders into self-supporting `green` shapes which are fired to provide refractory objects. In accordance with the invention the binders are based on zirconium salts and include a separate gell time delaying agent to ensure satisfactory gelling and to achieve control and to allow complex shapes to be made.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 6, 1978
Date of Patent: May 6, 1980
    Assignee: Zirconal Processes Limited
Inventors: Ian R. Walters, Harold G. Emblem
  • Patent number: 4194036
Abstract: The invention relates to the insulating of furnace walls. In accordance with the invention insulating modules are secured to the wall with cement. According to a preferred feature of the invention the modules are contained under elastic compression in a combustible netting envelope.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 6, 1977
Date of Patent: March 18, 1980
    Assignee: Zirconal Processes Limited
Inventors: Richard P. B. Davis, Harold G. Emblem, Richard D. Shaw, Stanley J. Shelley
  • Patent number: 4166753
Abstract: The invention provides a method of producing a usefully gellable cohydrolysate from a normally gellable substance and a substance not normally gellable. The latter substance has an alkoxy group implanted on it and preferably is a hydrous oxide which offers appropriate bridge groups for this implant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 5, 1977
Date of Patent: September 4, 1979
    Assignee: Zirconal Processes Limited
Inventors: Harold G. Emblem, Anup K. Das
