Publication number: 20120274063Abstract: A pipe connecting apparatus includes an outer gland assembly having a plurality of outer gland segments adapted to engage first and second pipes, a sealing member, and an inner gland assembly. Each outer gland segment has an arcuate wall with a groove formed therein, a rear wall extending radially inward from the arcuate wall, and a pair of connection members. The outer gland segments, when connected, define an annular groove and an adjacent annular space. The annular groove receives an outer edge of a bell end flange. The sealing member is disposed within the annular space and the inner gland assembly is disposed within the annular space adjacent the sealing member. The inner gland assembly includes a plurality of pipe gripping members, each pivotable within the annular space in response to an axial force such that a respective tooth of each is inserted into a surface of the first pipe.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 24, 2012Publication date: November 1, 2012Inventor: Harold Kennedy, JR.

Publication number: 20110291409Abstract: A pipe gripping element has an arcuate pipe engaging face with opposite front and rear edges, and an elongated, arcuate tooth extending outwardly therefrom between the front and rear edges. A portion of the pipe engaging face between the front edge thereof and the tooth forms a buttress pocket that retains a volume of pipe material displaced when the tooth is extended into a surface of a pipe. The displaced pipe material forms a load bearing buttress that prevents pipe movement. A pipe joint restraint includes an annular retainer gland, a plurality of pockets circumferentially spaced around the gland, and a plurality of pipe gripping elements operably associated therewith for gripping and restraining a pipe. A plurality of stops are associated with a projecting rim of the pipe joint restraint and limit the distance the projecting rim can be inserted within a second pipe fitting.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 1, 2010Publication date: December 1, 2011Inventors: Harold Kennedy, JR., Sean M. Patent number: 7748100Abstract: A pipe joint restraint (16) includes a pocket (74) having a fulcrum (92) a fixed distance from the centerline (26) of an annular retaining gland (22) and about which a gripping element (76) pivots to move a gripping edge (75) toward the centerline (26) so as to grip a pipe (14) engaged by the gripping element (76) in response to thrust forces on the pipe (14). The length of gripping edge (75) is selected for the material of pipe (14). Adjustable element (78) operatively connects to the gripping element (76) and fulcrum (92) to pivot with the gripping element (76). Adjustable element (78) and may be torqued to a common, predetermined torque whether the pipe (14) is metal or polymeric.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2007Date of Patent: July 6, 2010Inventor: Harold Kennedy, Jr.

Patent number: 5992905Abstract: A pipe joint for connecting a plain pipe end. The joint has a bell which has a socket defined therein. The socket includes an axis, a conical surface, a first cylindrical surface of smaller diameter extending from one end of the conical surface, a bottom of the socket adjacent the first cylindrical surface for seating the pipe end, and a second cylindrical surface of larger diameter extending from the other end of the conical surface. A gasket is disposed adjacent the conical surface prior to sealing with the conical surface acting as a gasket seat during sealing of the gasket. A gland is provided and has a radially extending handle for rotating the gland from outside the bell. A breech lock mechanism is provided which includes internal segments on the second cylindrical surface of the socket and corresponding, cooperating external segments on the gland, the internal and external segments having matching, mirrored inclined plane surfaces for engagement with each other.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1998Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Suiken + Kennedy, LLPInventors: Harold Kennedy, Jr., Toshiyuki Sato

Patent number: 5071175Abstract: A pipe restraining mechanism for use in a pipe retainer gland to secure the gland on a pipe such as PVC pipe and ductile iron pipe including a housing forming a part of the retainer gland and having a pocket therein opening inside of the gland, a wedge operator member on the top wall of the housing, and a pipe gripping wedge in the housing pocket having inside teeth for engagement with the outer surface of a pipe and adapted to be initially mechanically pressed into a pipe surface by the operator member and thereafter fully engaged with the pipe surface responsive to hydraulic pressure in the pipe causing a wedging action with the operator member and thereafter a turning action between the wedge and a housing surface to drive the wedge teeth into the pipe surface and seat the wedge on the pipe surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Inventor: Harold Kennedy, Jr.

Patent number: 4637641Abstract: An assembly means for the standardized mechanical joint when used on pipeline appurtenances such as gate valves, fittings, etc., wherein the design or dimensions of said appurtenances prevent the insertion of the standardized T-bolt in one or more bolt holes. An improved fastener is inserted and tightened from the gland side facilitating the rapid assembly of said joint. Said improved fastener eliminates the need for slots on gate valves, fittings and the like, and prevents failure of the cast-iron valve body during compression of the gasket.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1985Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Inventor: Harold Kennedy, Jr.

Patent number: 4402531Abstract: A fire hydrant nozzle assembly which permits a bronze fire hydrant nozzle to be readily and simply attached to a cast iron hydrant barrel without the use of lead caulking, screw threads, or other methods generally requiring machining. Un-intentional removal of the bronze nozzle as a result of the application of relatively high torque typically required to remove a protective cap is effectively prevented. To provide these features, a bronze nozzle member is retained within a hydrant boss member by means of a bayonet type or breech lock type mechanism involving cooperating lugs, and a resilient seal such as an O-ring is provided. For locking the nozzle member in its installed position, a pin element passes through a pair of corresponding apertures in confronting surfaces of the boss and nozzle members. The installed position is positively defined by respective locating engagement surfaces carried by the boss and nozzle members, which surfaces serve to limit rotation.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1980Date of Patent: September 6, 1983Assignee: American Cast Iron Pipe CompanyInventor: Harold Kennedy, Jr.

Patent number: 4113286Abstract: A pipe hanger for hanging pipe lines joined with a coupling which employs a sleeve type gasket encircled and clamped with a flexible metal band and which utilizes bolts to provide the clamping force. The hanger strip is so constructed that it allows use of the clamping force to force the vertical leg of the hanger strip against the gasket, thus creating pre-compression of the gasket at this critical location.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1977Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Assignee: United States Pipe and Foundry CompanyInventor: Harold Kennedy, Jr.
