  • Patent number: 5620546
Abstract: The floor mat of the present process is a pliable multilayer structure having an upper face layer and a base layer. The base layer has a main body section bordered by an edge section. Preferably, the main body section is relatively thin and the edge section is relatively thick. A surface of the base layer is adapted to confront flooring overlaid by the mat. The edge section has a channel extending longitudinally thereof, and preferably opening from the bottom surface of the edge section. A portion of the main body section can have a channel molded therein such that a portion of the main body section is disposed above the remainder of the main body section to provide a decorative and aesthetically pleasing design in the main body section.

  • Patent number: 5171619
Abstract: An automotive floor mat and process of forming the same is provided. The floor mat comprises an uppermost face layer, a base layer of thermoplastic material and a lowermost polyurethane foam layer. The base layer includes a main body and a plurality of elongate nib elements connected to and projecting downwardly therefrom, and in contact with and projecting through the polyurethane foam layer.Formation of the nib elements, projection of them throughout polyurethane layer, and joining together of the base and polyurethane layers are accomplished substantially simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4856654
Abstract: A package includes a pair of car mats which are positioned together in overlying relationship to each other by means engaging both car mats. Each of the mats includes outwardly extending spaced apart projections which are adapted to maintain the car mats in a placed relationship when positioned on top of the carpet of an automobile. A pair of relatively small pads are connected alongside the mats and adapted for further aiding in maintaining the car mats in a desired placed relationship when positioned on the carpet of an automobile. Each pad includes outwardly extending spaced apart projections on one side and an adhesive layer and a release cover applied to the other side so that upon removal of the release covers the pads can be releasably secured to an automobile carpet, wherein the projections of the mats engage the projections of the pads to ensure maintenance of the mat in a desired placed location.

  • Patent number: 4804567
Abstract: A floor covering includes an automobile carpet having a carpet pad attaching means removably connected by a pressure sensitive adhesive layer to the carpet. The carpet pad attaching means includes a base having projections extending upwardly therefrom which interengage with projections extending downwardly from the backside of a carpet pad for preventing shifting of the carpet pad when it is placed in overlying relation to the carpet and carpet pad attaching means.

  • Patent number: 4751764
Abstract: An anchor for use in vehicles to prevent movement of a floor mat relative to a floor covering in which the floor covering is partly noncarpeted. In one preferred embodiment the anchor has two sections and is disposed between a floor mat and a floor covering. The first section has upwardly extending projections for engaging the bottom of the floor mat and downwardly extending projections for engaging the carpet area of the floor covering. The second section has at least one smooth major surface and is made from a material having a high coefficient of friction. The smooth major surface abuttingly engages the noncarpet area of the floor covering. A second major surface which is located in the second section opposite the smooth side engages the bottom of the floor mat.

  • Patent number: 4748063
Abstract: A floor covering for an automobile is disclosed and includes an automobile carpet of a predetermined size and configuration and at least one carpet pad overlying a predetermined area of the carpet. A carpet pad attaching means connects to the face of the carpet in at least one localized area of the carpet and comprises a unitary group of upstanding integrally formed spaced apart projections which extend upwardly from the face of the carpet. The carpet pad has a plurality of downwardly extending integrally formed spaced apart projections connected thereto and which depend from the backside thereof and are adapted to penetrate into the underlying carpet for preventing the shifting of the pad. Some of the projections depending from the carpet pad intermesh with the unitary group of upstanding projections to ensure maintenance of the carpet pad in its desired placed relationship overlying the automobile carpet.

  • Patent number: 4382986
Abstract: An automobile floor mat designed to reduce movement of the mat relative to the floor having a relatively stiff portion and a second portion having a relatively flexible portion, the stiff and second portions each having base portions of monolithic elastomeric materials connected in a hinge area so that the mat can be molded in a single molding operation. The relative difference in rigidity permits the flexible portion to bend relative to the stiff portion and can be accomplished by materials of different thickness or rigidity or both.

  • Patent number: 4324824
Abstract: A tufted pile floor covering is formed of a flexible polymeric base having a pile composite embedded therein. The pile composite is formed of a primary woven pile backing through which loops of the piling project. The piling is a coated fibrous material. In a preferred embodiment, the coating on the piling is chemically similar to the flexible polymeric base material. In assembling the piling composite on the base, portions of the piling loops projecting on one side of the primary backing are embedded in the flexible polymeric base creating a mechanical lock. Further, when the coating on the piling fibers is chemically compatible with the base material the coating is fused with the material of the flexible polymeric base. Thus, both a chemical and a mechanical lock are achieved between the piling and the flexible polymeric base.

  • Patent number: 4174991
Abstract: A method of laminating a curable elastomeric backing section to a pile carpet section, for example, for automobile floor mats, utilizing a compressive molding process to laminate the curable elastomeric backing to the carpet. Cooling the pile of the carpet protects the carpet from becoming substantially permanently deformed during molding despite the compressive molding pressure. While the carpet pile is being cooled, sufficient heat is applied to the elastomeric backing to cure the backing. The back face of the carpet is bonded to the elastomeric backing during the compressive molding process.
