Abstract: A method for changing the inductance of a multiple-tap transformer in a circuit having a current regulator and the transformer, including the steps of comparing the current regulator's duty-cycle to a duty-cycle setpoint, increasing the turns ratio of the transformer when the duty-cycle is less than the setpoint. An apparatus for switching the taps of a multiple-tap transformer connected to a power supply and a load circuit, including a load regulator for generating a desired duty-cycle signal, and an inductance controller having a first reference signal generator, a comparator for comparing the reference signal to the desired duty-cycle, and relays connected to the transformer taps that are responsive to the comparator.

Abstract: The present invention includes a method for separating AC and DC components of a composite waveform, and an inductive device capable of performing the method. The present invention also includes a ground fault condition monitoring system containing an inductive device of the present invention, and an electrical distribution system containing such a ground fault condition monitoring system, such as one for a lighting system.

Abstract: Hoist apparatus of the type adapted to be mounted on a truck adjacent the truck bed, leaving the truck bed clear, for use in unloading or loading the truck or the like, and comprising a boom, hoist means on said boom, a vertical support column, said boom being mounted on the upper end of said column, and said support column being rotatably mounted for rotating said boom, drive gear means located adjacent the lower end of said support column, rack means meshing with said drive gear means, guide means for guiding movement of said rack to and fro relative to said drive gear, housing means supporting said vertical column, and at least partially embracing said drive gear and supporting said guide means, and, power operated means connected with said rack, and mounted on said housing, for driving said rack to and fro.

Abstract: A welder's helmet having means to reduce the level of noise reaching a welder's ears when the helmet is positioned for welding. The helmet is characterized by the fact that the sound reducing means while fixed to the helmet does not contact or rest upon the head, ears or face of the welder thus not interfering with normal atmosphere circulation between the welder's head and helmet.

Abstract: Saturated organic compounds containing a hydrogen atom bound to a tertiary carbon atom may be electrophilically fluorinated by reaction with an electrophilic fluorinating agent such as molecular fluorine or trifluoromethyl hypofluorite under conditions whereby the formation of free fluorine radicals is suppressed, e.g. by the presence of a free radical inhibitor such as oxygen or nitrobenzene, the reactants being substantially homogeneously dispersed in a liquid medium, e.g. a solvent medium such as fluorotrichloromethane or chloroform/fluorotrichloromethane, so that the said hydrogen atom is electrophilically replaced by a fluorine atom. The fluoroination is highly selective and, in the case of complex substrates such as saturated steroids which contain a number of tertiary C--H bonds, may be substantially completely confined to replacement of the hydrogen atom at the tertiary carbon atom which has the highest electron density about the C--H bond.

Abstract: A direct cranking starter drive for an internal combustion engine has a driven member drivably connected to the engine crank shaft and a driving unit drivably connected to the starting motor. A clutch between the driving unit and the driven member is engaged when the engine runs below a running speed for drivably connecting the driving unit to the driven member and is disengaged when the engine runs above the running speed for disconnecting the driving unit from the driven member. Bearings are provided for permitting relative rotation of the driving unit and driven member when the engine is running and the clutch is disengaged.

Abstract: The present invention relates to starter gearing of the positive shift dentil type overrunning clutch wherein provisions are made for the resilient means to absorb the torsional loads on the housing body after the starter gearing has become engaged with the engine ring gear, thereby enabling the elimination of a bearing sleeve member under the pinion gear and enabling the use of smaller sized pinion gears, resulting in the use of said starter gearing on smaller pinion gear applications.

Abstract: Compounds of the general formula ##STR1## are provided wherein the substituents R, which may be the same or are different, represent hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbyl groups and the groups R.sup.1 represent hydrocarbyl groups or adjacent pairs of substituents R, or R and R.sup.1 together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached may constitute a non-aromatic ring structure, said hydrocarbyl groups or ring structure if desired carrying one or more substituents. Preferred compounds include steroid 1,4-diene-3-thiones of the cholestane, androstane, oestrane and pregnane series. Compositions containing these compounds are also provided.

Abstract: Novel semisynthetic .beta.-lactam intermediates of use in the production of cephalosporins, penicillins and related .beta.-lactam antibiotic compounds are provided. The novel compounds are prepared from .beta.-lactams obtained by cleavage of the 1,2-sulphur-carbon bond of a penicillin 1-oxide (with subsequent internal or external trapping of the sulphur atom to leave a residual substituent as the .beta.-lactam nitrogen) by removal of the said residual substituent by an oxidative cleavage reaction.

Abstract: 11-Halo derivatives of amitriptyline and its analogues, i.e. 5-(1'-halo-3'-aminoprop-1'-yl-idene)-5H-dibenzo[a,d]-10,11-dihydrocyclohep tenes and corresponding 11-oxa analogues as well as the acid addition salts thereof, have notable anti-depressant and tranquillising activity. They are prepared by reacting a 5-(3'-aminoprop-1'-ylidene)-5H-dibenz[a,d]-10,11-dihydrocycloheptene or an 11-oxa analogue thereof, or an acid addition salt thereof, with an electrophilic halogenating agent.

Abstract: A hydraulic governor valve coordinates the flow of crop material to a processing unit with the rate of processing of material therein. A gear driven pump is powered by the processing unit in direct relation therewith to drive a conveyor hydraulic motor. The flow responsive governor valve diverts flow to a reservoir when the processing unit is overloaded and to the conveyor motor otherwise to coordinate delivery of crop material with processing of same.

Abstract: A carpet stretcher of the type which normally uses a rear wall as a backstop when stretching carpet toward an opposite forward wall may be converted into a stretcher which pulls against a forwardly disposed tack strip during stretching if a rear wall is not available or is too remote to be of practical benefit. The converting attachment is secured to a stationary part of the basic tool behind its shiftable carpet-engaging head but extends forwardly beyond the head and terminates in a normally upright blade that catches behind the far side of the tack strip when in use to provide an anchor point for the stretcher. The head can thus be located in close proximity to the blade to minimize the unstretched margin of the carpet as it is presented into overlying relationship with the tack strip.

Abstract: Novel azetidin-2-ones having in the 4-position an S-attached saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group having at least 2 carbon atoms and in the 3-position an amino or blocked amino group are provided. The novel compounds are useful as intermediates in the production of cephalosporins, penicillins and related .beta.-lactam antibiotic compounds. The novel compounds are prepared by cleaving a penicillin-1-oxide in the presence of a compound containing a nucleophilic carbon-carbon multiple bond not forming part of a ring.

Abstract: A quick-open blister package comprises a base member and a blistered containment member peripherally secured to the base member. The base member is frangible substantially along a plane contained therewithin, and first and second series of score lines extending at least in part about the periphery of the blister are cut into the base member substantially to the depth of the plane of frangibility. The blister is secured to the base member within that area thereof which is defined by the series of score lines. A considerable area of the base member can extend laterally of the blister for front printing.

Abstract: There is described the preparation of a mononitrate ester of a diol by photolysing in the presence of molecular oxygen a nitrite ester of an alcohol having a hydrogen atom conformationally adjacent to the hydroxy group and in which the atoms joining the hydrogen atom and the hydroxyl group include at least two adjacent atoms forming part of a ring.
