  • Patent number: 11467297
Abstract: An acoustic array has a frame and multimode transducers positioned along the frame. The multimode transducers are cylindrical and divided into circumferential transducer segments. The transducer segments each have a common ground electrode and an electrode associated with the segment. An elastomeric bushing is between each multimode transducer and the frame. Electrical leads are joined to the electrodes. A proximate plug is provided at one end of the frame, and a distal plug is provided at the other. A connector is positioned in the proximate plug and joined to the electrical leads. An elastomeric hose surrounds the frame and is sealed to the proximate plug and the distal plug. The interior volume is filled with a dielectric fluid.

  • Patent number: 7106658
Abstract: An apparatus for determining a position includes a source which transmits a signal having a source position and a transmission time coded therein. A sensor having a directional beam pattern is positioned at the location of interest. A signal processor steers the directional beam pattern of the sensor in order to determine the direction to the signal source. A sensor processor uses a clock to find a receipt time of the signal. The transmission time and source position is decoded from the signal. The position of interest is calculated from the receipt time, transmission time, direction, and source position. A method is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6388948
Abstract: A method and system for determining the effective sound velocity between a source of sound energy located at an initial depth ZS and an actual target located at another depth. A system utilizing a device such as a computer or microprocessor is used for implementing the method of the present invention. An effective sound velocity (“ESV”) matrix is generated wherein ESV values are a function of actual target depth and actual target elevation angle. The ESV matrix is then used to determine the ESV between a source of sound energy located at an initial depth ZS and an actual target located at any depth between ZS and a final target depth ZT.

  • Patent number: 6028823
Abstract: A system and survey method for estimating the geodetic position of acoustic sensors placed at fixed but unknown locations on the seafloor is disclosed. Bottom mounted sensors are surveyed using an extension of the well known trilateration survey technique, i.e., making ranging measurements from reference points to the point to be surveyed. For acoustic sensors, these ranging measurements are obtained by transmitting an acoustic signal from a near surface projector and making corresponding timing and/or position measurements, requiring calculation of the Effective Sound Velocity. Bias errors are precluded from propagating to the sensor coordinates by considering timing and sound velocity biases, in addition to the sensor coordinates, as parameters to be estimated.

  • Patent number: 5774421
Abstract: An underwater measurement device includes a housing for disposition on a bed surface, an opening defined by the housing, a buoy for disposition in the opening and buoyant so as to be floatable out of the opening, a cable interconnecting the housing and the buoy, and a winch in the buoy to pay out and take in the cable to permit the buoy to rise toward the sea surface and be drawn into the housing opening. A sensor is fixed to the buoy. Disposed in the device are communication circuitry for relaying to a remote station signals detected by the sensor, and operative circuitry for receiving instructions from the remote station and in response thereto operating the winch and the sensor.
