  • Patent number: 4645383
Abstract: An end milling cutter has a cutter head with a pair of opposed slots extending longitudinally inwardly from the end face and generally radially from the lateral surface to a central cylindrical bore. Each slot forms insert-supporting shoulders which extend from the core to the lateral surface of the head. A triangular cutting insert is received in each slot and is supported on one side by the shoulders. A pressed dimple extending inwardly of the cutter head from the end face, engages and supports a second side of each of the inserts such that the cutting edges thereof are at a prescribed diameter.

  • Patent number: 4592680
Abstract: A rotary cutter for holding replaceable cutting inserts includes a cylindrical bore having a generally radially-disposed axis which makes an acute angle with the insert cutting face, thus forming a wedge-shaped portion in the holder between the insert-supporting face and the axis of the bore. A cylindrical locking member is received in the bore. An insert-retaining locking screw threadedly engages the locking member. The wedge-shaped portion of the holder causes increased tension in the locking screw during rotation of the cutter, which insures insert retention at high rotational speeds.

  • Patent number: 4522538
Abstract: A milling cutter comprises a body with a rim having an annular seating surface and forming a lip around such surface, a spacer ring having a rim complementary to the seating surface and provided with a plurality of generally radial slots, a cutting insert received in each such slot, a side of the insert being supported by the seating surface, the lip preventing radially outward movement of the insert, and a retaining ring having a surface adapted to engage a second side of the insert to clamp it against the seating surface of the body.

  • Patent number: 4509886
Abstract: A cutting tool provides a cutting insert receiving slot with a retaining lip to engage a face of the insert and prevent movement normal to its face. The insert has a centrally disposed keyway extending fully across one face. In one embodiment the lip engages the keyway; in another embodiment a locating pin engages the keyway to prevent longitudinal movement of the insert relative to the holder.

  • Patent number: 4470732
Abstract: A cutting tool in which a retention pin releasably holds an insert, or an insert and seat, in place in a recess of a cutter body. The retention pin is fabricated from a blank having a cylindrical body portion with a first axis concurrent with the axis of the cylindrical head thereof, the body portion thereafter being threaded on a second axis angularly disposed with respect to the first axis and intercepting the same at about the mid-point thereof. When the thus threaded pin is inserted into the bore, it rotates the head portion about the second axis, thereby to force the cutter insert against a supporting shoulder while drawing the insert into engagement with the seat. A retaining lip is provided on the shoulder to prevent tipping of the insert when such is forced into operating position.

  • Patent number: 4264245
Abstract: A holder or nest for pin-type replaceable cutting inserts has a back face and a front face parallel to the back face for supporting a pin-type replaceable cutting insert of the type having a circular aperture centrally disposed therein. A pin extends perpendicularly to the front face of the holder, on which pin the cutting insert is received. The holder comprises an extension having a face coplanar with the back face of the holder itself. The extension further comprises a threaded aperture to receive a screw which serves to clamp the holder and the cutting insert into a recess in the cutter body.

  • Patent number: 4195955
Abstract: A holder or nest for pin-type replaceable cutting inserts having a circular aperture centrally disposed therein, includes a pin extending perpendicularly to the face of the holder, the pin being cylindrical and being formed with a pair of discrete opposed axially-extending portions, each of the portions comprising a segment of a circular cylinder having a periphery less than 180.degree.. The radius of each of the portions is selected equal to the radius of the aperture in the cutting inserts. The portions meet in a plane normal to the face of the tool holder and disposed perpendicularly to the axis of the clamping screw which is threadedly receivable in the body of the holder.

  • Patent number: 4018542
Abstract: An adjustable tool holder for a boring bar has a first shank portion including a cutting tip keyed to a second shank portion to form a torsionally unitary cutting tool of constant exterior dimension receivable in a cylindrical bore in the boring bar. An adjusting screw is threadedly received in an axially extending bore in the first shank portion. The screw has an annular laterally enlarged head received and rotatable in an enlarged portion of the bore disposed in the second shank portion. An annular retaining bushing is press fit in a socket in the end of the second shank portion. The bushing retains the head of the adjusting screw within the enlarged portion of the axial bore, whereby rotation of the screw advances or retracts the first shank portion axially with respect to the second shank portion to a desired cutting position, the keying means between the mating shank portions preventing relative rotation therebetween.
