Patent number: 8477786Abstract: A method of modifying a data message during transmission through a data communications network, the data communications network being arranged to deliver messages under control of a network operator and including a first store-and-forward network node. The first store-and-forward network node is arranged to store data messages and forward the same to a recipient in dependence on status data corresponding to a terminal associated therewith. The method further includes receiving a message at a second store-and-forward node, wherein the second store-and-forward node is different from the first store-and-forward network node, arranging for the message to be modified before being forwarded from the second store-and forward node, and transmitting the message to the first store-and-forward network node for forwarding to the recipient.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2012Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Harri Myllynen, Pasi Leino, Antti Ohrling

Patent number: 8243636Abstract: Embodiments of ihe disclosure are concerned with modification of messages en route to a destination. One such modification is the addition of third party material, such as advertisement data, to a message. A service located in the network receives the sender's message and decodes the indicated modification in order to decide how to modify the message. The message can include transmission data identifying one or more destinations and a message body identifying content thereof which is specified by a sending party. The service can select data on the basis of at least one parameter that is not directly related to the location of the sending party and the selected data are not directly related to the content of the message. The service can modify the message with the selected data. Thus, the decision as to the nature of the modification is unrelated to messages that are composed by the user.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2004Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Harri Myllynen, Pasi Leino, Antti Ohrling

Patent number: 8099079Abstract: A method and system for distributing mobile applications includes receiving, processing and displaying advertisements on mobile terminals. Data is visualized on a display area of a mobile terminal that receives process data including an executable process. The mobile terminal receives a visualization request from the process; selects data in accordance with the visualization request; and displays the selected data the display area. Execution of at least part of the executable process is paused until the visualization process has completed. Thus mobile terminals process an executable process which makes calls for data to be displayed to a user. The displayed data may be advertisement data selected based on user preferences. The executable process may be a game which is paused at a particular level to display the data. The executable process might also be a news relaying application to retrieve and display news stories.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2004Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Harri Myllynen, Pasi Leino, Antti Ohrling

Publication number: 20060194595Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are concerned with modification of messages en route to a destination. One such modification is the addition of third party material, such as advertisement data, to a message. Conventionally, such a modification of messages occurs in accordance with some input from the sender of the message, and, to enable the sender to indicate the nature of the desired modification, the terminal corresponding to the sender has to be equipped with bespoke software. A service located in the network then receives the sender's message and decodes the indicated modification in order to decide how to modify the message. When there are many subscribers to this service, each terminal needs to be adapted to allow indication of the desired modification to the message, and, if the adaptation is made by pushing data to such terminals over the network, this presents problems in terms of scalability and network traffic.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2004Publication date: August 31, 2006Inventors: Harri Myllynen, Pasi Leino, Antti Ohrling
