  • Patent number: 9137757
Abstract: A wireless communication device includes: an antenna for receiving inbound signals on dual receive channels and transmitting outbound signals on dual transmit channels; a transceiver coupled to the antenna to receive the inbound signals from the antenna and convey the outbound signals; a power controller coupled to the transceiver to control power levels of the outbound signals so a maximum nominal power level of the outbound signals is a first power level; and a processor coupled to the transceiver and the antenna to cause the power controller to control the power levels of the outbound signals so if a power level of a received one of the inbound signals is below a threshold value, then the maximum nominal power level of the outbound signals is a second power level lower than the first power level, wherein the second power level is lower than the first power level.

  • Publication number: 20100302991
Abstract: An apparatus and method inexpensively implements spatial diversity in a wireless terminal for use in a satellite communication system. A single transmit chain is coupled to a plurality of antennas through a switch for sequentially selecting each of the antennas during corresponding sub-frames of a data frame. Here, each sub-frame is adapted for transmission of a respective portion of an encoded information packet, encoded such that the entire information packet is recoverable from any one of the sub-frames.

  • Patent number: 7472148
Abstract: Method and apparatus for generating random numbers are disclosed. In one aspect, a method for generating random numbers for use in a wireless communication device provides for generating random numbers, gathering a sample of the generated random numbers, and computing at least one metric, such as mean value, standard deviation, and/or entropy. The method further provides for comparing the metric with a corresponding reference value and adjusting the metric based on a result of said comparison so that the generated random numbers achieve a desired distribution. In another aspect, an apparatus for generating random numbers includes an analog noise generator and hardware components for generating random numbers and feedback values to adjust the random numbers. The apparatus further includes a processor capable of executing instructions to carry out control algorithms for adjusting the random numbers.

  • Patent number: 7155231
Abstract: Techniques for pre-correction of transmit signals are disclosed. In one aspect, a transmit antenna array configurable to generate multiple transmit beams is deployed. The parameters for configuring the antenna array are computed in response to channel estimates and a noise floor estimate made at the receiver. Information is transmitted in accordance with the multiple transmit beams, delayed as necessary, such that the multipaths may arrive time-aligned an in-phase at the receiver. In another aspect, pre-RAKE pre-correction is deployed by calculating Wiener weights. In yet another aspect, space-time diversity is deployed for calculating tap values for FIR filters used in transmission on the transmit antenna array. In yet another aspect, space only pre-correction is deployed. Various other aspects are also disclosed. These aspects have the benefit of reducing the interference experienced at a receiver, resulting in increased capacity, increased data throughput, and other system benefits.

  • Patent number: 7062232
Abstract: Systems and techniques are disclosed relating to communications. The systems and techniques involve transmitting a signal through a first antenna, receiving feedback related to the signal transmission through the first antenna, selecting between the first antenna and a second antenna as a function of the feedback, and transmitting the signal through the selected antenna. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract which will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. It is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or the meaning of the claims.

  • Patent number: 7046978
Abstract: A wireless communication system includes a base station having a plurality of transmit antennas transmits pilot signals to a subscriber station. The subscriber station performs channel measurements on the signals received from the base station through at least two transmit paths and sends path characteristic information for each path to the base station. The base station uses the path characteristic information to determine how best to transmit data from the multiple transmit antennas to a single receive antenna at the subscriber station. Through the use of pre-correction techniques, data signals are transmitted through the multiple transmit antennas such that signals received through the multiple transmit paths can be demodulated and decoded as a single signal.
