    Abstract: A composite material is provided. The composite material includes a hydrogel matrix having a three-dimensional geometry and fibers embedded and substantially uniformly distributed within the three-dimensional hydrogel matrix. The fibers have a substantially circular cross-sectional geometry and are anisotropically aligned. Methods of making and using the composite material are also provided.
