    Abstract: Method and device for removing foreign bodies from a first tobacco stream that is conveyed via an air flow in a region of a first foreign body detection device. Method includes detecting, with a first foreign body detection device, the foreign bodies in the first tobacco stream based on at least one property, and removing, with a jet of compressed air, the foreign bodies from the first tobacco stream. In this manner, a foreign body freed tobacco stream and a second tobacco stream including tobacco particles and the foreign bodies entrained by the jet of compressed air are formed. Method also includes at least one of: accelerating the second stream at a distance from the first tobacco stream; and detecting, with a second foreign body detector, foreign bodies in the second stream based on at least one property and removing the detected foreign bodies with a second jet of compressed air.

A mechanical valve arrangement in the region of the diverter transfers a portion of the tobacco stream containing the detected foreign object out of the tobacco stream such that the tobacco stream containing the foreign object is not diverted and the remainder of the stream is diverted.

    Abstract: The invention concerns an apparatus and a method for removing foreign matter from tobacco to be processed. With known apparatuses, a stream of material substantially consisting of tobacco is guided over and through several components connected one behind the other, namely, delivery device, apparatus for removing foreign matter, vibrating element, conveying element for accelerating the stream of material, and an optical testing element. This takes up a large amount of space. Furthermore, the manufacturing costs for such apparatuses and the corresponding methods are high. The object of providing a compact and more cost-efficient apparatus is achieved by the fact that the apparatus for removing the foreign matter is arranged directly above the conveying element which accelerates the stream of material. Several components can be saved as a result, so that the space requirements as well as the manufacturing costs fall. The same applies to the corresponding method.

The segregating device which divides the flow into the first and second streams is or can be utilized to treat the second stream, i.e., to segregate smokable material of the second stream from the non-smokable material of the second stream.

The endless belt or chain discharges a single layer of tobaco particles and foreign particles, and such single layer is caused to move past a segregating unit which detects and expels foreign particles therefrom.
