    Abstract: A manhole step assembly including a substantially U-shaped metal rod and a corrosion resistant covering molded about the rod is taught. The covering has a tapered portion formed at the free ends thereof, and the tapered portion has a roughed surface to increase the surface area of compression which is used to hold the step in place in the wall of a manhole shaft. A socket which may be cast in such a shaft is also disclosed.
