  • Patent number: 5066350
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of applying a refractory coating to a conduit. The refractory coating is provided by mixing a refractory mortar with water, impregnating a water absorbent web of fibrous material with the liquid mixture, securing a leading end portion of the impregnated web to a surface of the conduit, wrapping at least one layer of the impregnated web on the conduit surface as a coating, and drying the coating to remove the water and cause the refractory mixture to chemically bond. The conduit may be a pipe protected by the coating for use in injecting a refining agent beneath the surface of a molten metal composition comprising a scrap metal such as copper, aluminum or iron.

  • Patent number: 4802940
Abstract: A method for coating an elongated pipe with a refractory material by turning the pipe to wind around it a web of porous material pulled from a dispenser and around a bar mounted within a trough in a position below the surface of a solution of refractory material in the trough. The leading end of the web is secured to the pipe by a tuck locking arrangement. The web is tensioned during the winding and relative movement is provided between the web dispenser and the turning pipe to provide tightly wound spiral windings of the coated web.

  • Patent number: 4799987
Abstract: A pipe turning apparatus for rotatably mounting and turning a pipe and having a threaded chuck member for rotatably engaging one end of the pipe and a chuck fitting for slidably engaging the other end of the pipe. The threaded chuck member reciprocates and is rotatable by a drive mechanism in opposite directions so as to engage and disengage threads on the one pipe end. The chuck fitting slidably receives the other pipe end which may carry thereon a second coupling which remains threaded on the pipe. The chuck fitting may include resilient fingers surrounded by an adjustable collar so as to vary the force for gripping the other pipe end and for quick insertion and removal of the other pipe end from the fitting. The drive mechanism may be activated by the motor of a conventional hand drill. Turning apparatus may include attachments for wrapping the pipe with a web or coating the pipe with a chemical coating composition.

  • Patent number: 4783057
Abstract: Disclosed is a heat resistant composite comprising a refractory coating on a metal substrate. The refractory coating is provided by mixing a refractory mortar with water, impregnating a water absorbent web of fibrous material with the liquid mixture, placing at least one layer of the impregnated web on a surface of the substrate as a coating, and drying the coating to remove the water and cause the refractory mixture to chemically bond. The substrate may be a pipe protected by the coating for use in injecting a refining agent beneath the surface of a molten metal composition comprising a scrap metal such as copper or aluminum.

  • Patent number: 4781776
Abstract: An apparatus and method for coating an elongated pipe wherein a web is coated with a liquid coating composition in a stationary trough and wound spirally around the pipe by turning the pipe over the trough. While the pipe is turned, a web dispenser moves substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the pipe and the dispensed web passes around an elongated bar positioned within the trough to cause the web to be pulled through and coated with the liquid. Movement of the web dispensing means relative to the trough causes the coated web to travel along the bar in a direction transverse to the direction in which the web is dispensed. The web also may travel along a friction member extending substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the pipe so as to tension the web before it is coated.
