  • Publication number: 20040019695
Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product enable instant messaging systems to use alternative message delivery mechanisms. Recipients may register one or more alternative message delivery mechanisms, such as cell phones, pagers, etc., through which they are available as an alternative to an instant messaging system. Constraints may be added to these registered alternatives, such as specifying a limitation on days of the week and/or hours of the day when a particular alternative may be used. Providing that an alternative messaging mechanism is registered, and any constraints for this alternative are satisfied, the present extended instant messaging system selects the most suitable alternative forwarding mechanisms, and delivers the messages to the intended recipients.

  • Publication number: 20040010798
Abstract: A guardian review system is disclosed which monitors the television programming that a child watches and to report back to the parent. The hardware consists of a logical unit which is used to monitor the television programming. The software is divided into two programs: the monitor program and the report program. The monitor program analyzes the closed captioning signal, the audio signal, the title, and content ratings of the television programming to determine if the television programming contains any of the offensive items specified by the parent. The monitor program creates data of the offensive language viewed by the child and sends the data to the report program. The reporting program receives criteria from the parent such as time, channel, duration, rating, and content of a television program. The report program can operate either on the television or on an external computing device, such as the parent's personal computer.

  • Publication number: 20030105822
Abstract: An apparatus and method for monitoring instant messaging user accounts are provided. The apparatus and method provide a mechanism by which transcripts of instant messages may be generated and analyzed to determine if inappropriate contact with unapproved users is occurring. A user is registered with an instant messaging service provider such that an indication as to whether or not transcripts of the user's instant messages should be stored. In addition, a listing of destination user identifications that are approved, and thus do not require transcripts, may be provided to the instant messaging service provider. Thereafter, when an instant message is received, a look-up of the source user identification of the instant message, and optionally, the destination user identification, may be used to determine if transcripts are to be stored. The transcript may be reported to an authorized recipient of the transcript.
