Patent number: 11540846Abstract: A device for implanting an intramedullary nail includes a base member and an adjustable member coupled together and translatable relative to each other along a direction. The device includes an insertion handle configured to carry the nail and mount to the adjustable member. A drill guide is attachable to the base member and configured to carry one or more guide sleeves for alignment with locking holes of the intramedullary nail. A first reference member extends from the base or adjustable member and has a first contact portion configured to contact an exterior location of a patient's limb. A second reference member extends from the other of the base and adjustable members and has a second contact portion configured to contact another exterior location of the limb. At least one of the first and second reference members is positionally adjustable relative to the base or adjustable member from which it extends.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2019Date of Patent: January 3, 2023Assignee: DEPUY SYNTHES PRODUCTS, INC.Inventors: Stephen R. Rettew, René Haag, Abhishek Ekbote, Muruganandam Mani, Harry T. Hall, IV

Patent number: 10271881Abstract: An implant for fixation of a bone includes a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and a longitudinal axis defined between the proximal end and the distal end. A plurality of blades are disposed on the shaft, and are helically twisted about the longitudinal axis. At least one of the blades has a variable blade width that increases in a direction along the longitudinal axis. A mechanism for coupling the implant to a second fracture fixation implant may be provided separately or in combination.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2018Date of Patent: April 30, 2019Assignee: DePuy Synthes Products, Inc.Inventors: Christoph Andreas Roth, Harry T. Hall, IV

Patent number: 8551092Abstract: A monitoring system includes: (1) an implant having at least one sensor and configured for at least partial insertion into a patient, a first one of sensors being in contact with a perimeter of a hole in a body portion of the implant for accepting a fastener; (2) a microchip associated with the implant and the sensor, the microchip configured to receive at least a first signal from the sensor; (3) a transmitter associated with the microchip for transmitting a second signal, representative of the first signal; (4) a receiver located outside of the patient, the receiver configured receive the transmitted second signal; and (5) a display device associated with the receiver, the display device configured to provide an audible or visual representation of the second signal to a user.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2011Date of Patent: October 8, 2013Assignee: Depuy Synthes Products, LLCInventors: Chad Morgan, Harry T. Patent number: 8083741Abstract: The present invention relates to an orthopaedic implant, such as a bone plate, for the fixation of bone where the implant also has at least one microchip and at least one sensor connected to the microchip. The sensor or sensors are configured to receive physical stimulus from a portion of the implant or the patient's tissue such as temperature, pressure, and strain. The information received from the sensor or sensors is gathered by the microchip and transmitted to a receiver, such as a personal computer, outside the patient. This information enables doctors to diagnose the useful life of the implant, the load sharing of the bone plate, and possible complications typically associated with orthopaedic implants such as infection, fracture non-union, and fatigue. The implant may also have one or more electrodes located on its surface which emit an electric current to stimulate healing of the broken or fractured bone.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2005Date of Patent: December 27, 2011Assignee: Synthes USA, LLCInventors: Chad Morgan, Harry T. Hall, IV, James M. Green, Geoffrey Flexner, Charles E. Geltz
