Patent number: 9778732Abstract: An assembly includes a cabinet having an interior and a door to gain access to the interior. An intelligent electronic device (IED) is within the interior of the cabinet and includes inputs providing electrical connections to the IED, pushbuttons to provide user input to the IED, a display module including a display, a component, and a timer circuit. Patent number: 9426907Abstract: A containment system for internal arc generated gasses includes a compartment having an aperture through a wall thereof. A bus compartment includes an opening through a wall thereof. Arc chamber is in communication with the aperture and the opening. A vent flap member closes the opening and is moveable to an open position to permit gasses to flow through the opening into the arc chamber. Flap structure is associated with the aperture and includes a plurality of interconnected flaps for moving generally simultaneously from an open position, permitting gasses to flow through the aperture into the arc chamber, to a closed position, closing the aperture to prevent gasses from flowing through the aperture. The flap structure includes actuating structure coupled with the interconnected flaps. The vent flap member, when moved to the open position thereof, engages the actuating structure to move the interconnected flaps to the closed position thereof.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2011Date of Patent: August 23, 2016Assignee: ABB Technology AGInventors: Harshavardhan M. Patent number: 9419424Abstract: A bushing structure for switchgear includes first and second separate support structures each having surfaces defining at least one opening. The support structures are coupled together so that the openings define a passage through the bushing structure and so that a slot is defined between the first and second support structures, surrounding the passage. A bushing is disposed in the passage and has a body, a bus receiving member, and a compression structure. The bus receiving member has an opening there-through sized to receive a bus bar. When the first and second support structures are coupled together with the bushing in the passage, the compression structure is disposed in the slot, sandwiched between the first and second support structures so that they exert pressure on the compression structure.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2012Date of Patent: August 16, 2016Assignee: ABB Schweiz AGInventors: Robert S. Patent number: 9129510Abstract: Among other things, one or more techniques and/or systems are provided for monitoring an operating condition of an electrical component, such as electrical switchgear. In one example, temperatures associated with an electrical conductor connection within the electrical component may be evaluated against one or more expected temperatures curves derived from a linear regression model to determine whether the electrical conductor connection has failed or is starting to fail. In another example, temperature readings may be monitored to determine whether a temperature reading at one location is out of sync with temperature readings at other locations. An electrical conductor connection associated with a location of the out of sync temperature may be determined as faulty. In another example, a Euclidean distance model and/or a correlation coefficient model may be used to identify a faulty electrical conductor connection. In this way, failure and/or potential failure of the electrical component may be predicted.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2012Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: ABB TECHNOLOGY AGInventors: Wei Huang, Khoi Nguyen, Douglas A. Voda, David C. Lawrence, Harshavardhan M. Karandikar

Patent number: 8981945Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for monitoring switchgear. The current supplied to the main bus is measured. The current flowing through a plurality of feeder circuits is also measured. The temperature of the main bus at one or more nodes is measured, wherein a node is a connection point between the main bus and each feeder circuit. The current flowing through one of the nodes is determined by subtracting the current flow through each the feeder circuit upstream from the node, from the current supplied by the input circuit. An alarm condition is determined if the temperature at a node exceeds a predetermined temperature value for a given current flow through the node. The alarm condition is thereafter displayed to a switchgear operator.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2009Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Thomas P. McNamara, Harshavardhan M. Karandikar, Marek Budyn, Michael G. Urmson

Patent number: 8960815Abstract: A multipoint door latch apparatus for use in a switchgear enclosure comprising a door assembly, a latch handle and latch handle mechanism, a plurality of catch tabs affixed to the face frame of the enclosure. Top, side, and bottom latch bars in latch bar chambers are provided, each having at least one latch tooth and being linked by latch bar linkages such that a displacement of one latch bar along results in the same magnitude displacement in the other two latch bars. The catch tabs or latch teeth, or both, are tapered to provide a suitable seal between the door assembly and the enclosure when the door assembly is latched.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2012Date of Patent: February 24, 2015Assignee: ABB Technology AGInventors: Harshavardhan M. Publication number: 20150036310Abstract: A compartment of an arc resistant enclosure for an electrical component includes a plurality of wall structures defining an interior space for housing an electrical component. One of the wall structures has aperture structure for permitting pressure and gases to flow there-from and vent from the compartment. A stop structure is associated with the aperture structure. Flap structure is associated with the aperture structure and is movable from a closed position covering the aperture structure to an opened position extending outwardly of the compartment permitting pressure and gas to exit the compartment through the aperture structure. In the closed position, a portion of the flap structure engages the stop structure to prevent the flap structure from collapsing into the interior space of the compartment.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 7, 2011Publication date: February 5, 2015Applicant: ABB TECHNOLOGY AGInventors: Harshavardhan M. Karandikar, Robert S. Karnbach, Rahul Pawar
