  • Patent number: 4928660
Abstract: A protective case (13) for a vehicle ignition system covers both the ignition coil (5), an electronic control device (6), and the terminals (11) and connecting conductors (12) therebetween. The preferred material is plastic, with an electromagnetically conducting coating for screening against incoming and outing electromagnetic noise. Thus, protection is provided against mechanical, chemical, and electromagnetic environmental influences. The case is dimensioned to snap over and seal respective edges of the electronic control device (6), the ignition coil (5) and its core (8), the electrical terminals (11), and the interconnecting conductors (12). The case is bifurcated along an access slit (16) which is secured in a normally closed position by knob (15) which press-fits into a mating hole on the other side of the slit. Two sides of the case have curved ridges or dimples which provide flexibility to hinge the case open for insertion of the ignition coil (5) and electronic control device (6).

  • Patent number: 4529850
Abstract: The high-voltage breakdown strength of the cap, and particularly of the cap portions between adjacent cap towers (4-8), is improved. The skirt (2) of the distributor cap defines an ignition distribution chamber which, in cross-section, is essentially square, with rounded corners. The outer surfaces of the cap are likewise essentially square with rounded corners. The cap towers merge smoothly into the upper end or cap portion of the cap, as well as into the skirt portion, so that no ridges or pockets are formed on the outside of the cap which might accumulate contaminants, impairing the high-voltage breakdown resistance of the cap.

  • Patent number: 4463715
Abstract: To eliminate frictional effects by stationary elements (17, 37, 47) with respect to a sleeve (16, 36, 46) which rotates with a shaft (11) of a distributor, but is adjustable with respect to the instantaneous position about the shaft by a centrifugal spark advance mechanism (15), the nonrotatable elements (17, 37, 47) are secured from a support plate (22, 32, 49) which is positioned intermediate the sleeve and the distributor rotor, the support plate being journalled by bearings (23, 33, 44, 45) directly on the shaft. A load-dependent vacuum chamber can be linked directly to the support plate for additional load-dependent spark timing adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4462347
Abstract: The casing (10) of the distributor has integral internal ribs (14) and a bearing body (12) into which at least one of the bushings (16,17) of the bearing is pressed. The shoulders (15) provided on the ribs support an annular sheet steel plate (23) that carries the stationary portion (21) of a Hall transducer. The plate is centered on the sleeve-like end (13) of the bearing body and supported on the shoulders of the ribs, being secured in this position by screws to each of the three ribs. The integral construction of the casing, ribs and bearing body and the screwing down of the plate simplify manufacture and assembly of the distributor.

  • Patent number: 4428332
Abstract: To provide a pulse for engine ignition timing, a magnetic circuit is provided which includes a permanent magnet and magnetically conducting bodies with a gap provided between one pole face of the magnet and the remainder of the magnetic structure for passage of another magnetic body in its path of revolution in which it is driven by a shaft of the engine. A Hall generator is also provided at a suitable location in the magnetic circuit for responding to a sudden reduction of the magnetic flux when the revolving body exits from the air gap. A portion of the magnetic circuit including the permanent magnet is arranged to be shifted so as to increase the air gap in response to engine intake vacuum, which weakens the effect of the magnet on the Hall generator and advances the timing. An additional magnet provides a branch magnetic circuit which likewise weakens the effect on the Hall generator, but in this case upon approaching the main magnetic circuit, which is caused to happen when the engine speed increases.

  • Patent number: 4359978
Abstract: In an ignition distributor of a contactless controlled coil ignition system the stationary elements (16-21) of a Hall transducer are undetachably integrated in the distributor casing (10,30) or in a carrier plate (40). A plug connector casing (25,35) consisting of insulating material and providing with connector prongs (24) is spaced radially from the distributor casing (10,30) or from the carrier plate (40). The integration of the stationary elements of the Hall transducer and of the plug connector casing makes possible a construction of the ignition distributor that is compact and favorable for manufacturing technology.

  • Patent number: 4343285
Abstract: The Hall generator integrated circuit in the transistor-controlled ignition system of an internal combustion engine and an integrated circuit board which carries the circuit elements for overvoltage protection, amplification, and the power output stage are mounted together in one building block. Preferably, the conductive element and the permanent magnet of the Hall generator are also integrated into the building block as is a pressure sensor. The output of the pressure sensor is directly applied to the circuits in the printed circuit board. The unit occupies little space and eliminates the need for external leads interconnecting the ignition coil and the output circuit.

  • Patent number: 4185600
Abstract: The replacement unit includes a magnet circuit support magnetic barrier member which includes the magnet unit of a Hall generator and is adapted to be fastened to the contact interrupter plate. The unit also includes a distributor rotor adapted for mounting on the contact interrupter cam of the distributor shaft. A plastic reinforcing member of higher mechanical strength is anchored in the distributor rotor. It has a keying projection and extends over the region surrounding said projection, thereby reinforcing the critical section of the distributor rotor. Preferably it is cap-shaped and has an opening for accommodating a retaining member which retains the distributor rotor in the desired position.

  • Patent number: 4088853
Abstract: To reduce the axial length of distributor-breaker assemblies and to provide for reliable placing of a second upright bearing for the distributor shaft, a holding plate to which a bearing is floatingly attached is clamped in the distributor housing by means of a claw clamp, tightened by a transverse plate against itself and against a shoulder formed in the inner side wall of the distributor, the claw clamp being formed as a partly circumferential ring seated in a groove of the distributor.

  • Patent number: 4075752
Abstract: To prevent corrosion and provide for better relative movement of parts which move only slightly but are exposed to extremes in ambient operating conditions, a tubular piece of plastic material, typically Polyvinylidenfluoride or a polyamide, is drawn over the inner element of a relatively slidable pair, which may, for example be a distributor shaft, the distributor breaker cam, or distributor bearing pins, to cover the surface thereof engaged in slidable contact.
