  • Patent number: 7495053
Abstract: Aqueous, hydroxy-functional binder dispersions with a low solvent content and based on hydroxy-functional copolymers. The binders are prepared by subjecting one or more vinyl monomer mixtures containing OH-free (meth)acrylic esters and/or vinylaromatics, hydroxy-functional vinyl monomers and/or hydroxy-functional (meth)acrylic esters, and ionic and/or potentially ionic monomers capable of free-radical copolymerization, to free-radical polymerization in the presence of at least one compound containing lactone groups and subsequently dispersing the resultant copolymer before or after addition of a neutralizing agent in water. The binder combinations can be used in coating materials.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 2004
Date of Patent: February 24, 2009
    Assignee: Bayer MaterialScience AG
Inventors: Martin Melchiors, Thomas Münzmay, Thomas Stingl, Hartmut Ottensmann
  • Patent number: 7199178
Abstract: A process for preparing copolymer dispersions that includes subjecting A) one or more vinyl monomer mixtures containing a) OH-free (meth)acrylic esters and/or vinylaromatics, b) hydroxy-functional vinyl monomers and/or hydroxy-functional (meth)acrylic esters, c) ionic and/or potentially ionic monomers capable of free-radical copolymerization, and d)optionally further monomers, other than the compounds of components a)–c), capable of free-radical copolymerization; to free-radical polymerization in the presence of e) compounds according to formula (I) where R1 is an aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R2 is H or CH3, R3, R4 are identical or different aliphatc radicals having 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n is 1 to 4; and subsequently dispersing the resultant copolymer B) before or after addition of a neutralizing agent C) in water. The resulting dispersions can be used to coat substrates.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 24, 2005
Date of Patent: April 3, 2007
Inventors: Martin Melchiors, Thomas Münzmay, Thomas Stingl, Hartmut Ottensmann, Heinz-Dietmar Gewiss
  • Patent number: 7005470
Abstract: The invention relates to aqueous two-component polyurethane systems comprising vinyl polymer polyol dispersions modified with reactive diluents, to a process for preparing them and to use as coating materials.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 21, 2003
Date of Patent: February 28, 2006
    Assignee: Bayer Aktiengesellschaft
Inventors: Joachim Probst, Martin Melchiors, Gerhard Ruttmann, Thomas Stingl, Hartmut Ottensmann
