Abstract: A method for selecting a vocoder type for origination of a mobile telephone call including sending a first access request that includes a first value representing one of a set of vocoder types including a first vocoder type and a second vocoder type. If the first access request is rejected, then a second access request is sent. The second access request includes a second value representing one of the set of vocoder types other than the one of the set of vocoder types included in the first access request.

Abstract: Cellular telephone which utilizes a dial shuttle for selecting functions listed in various option lists to be performed. The dial shuttle is depressed by a user to call up a particular option list menu (option group) on the telephone's display. Upon depression of the dial shuttle, one of the option groups stored in memory that is associated with the current operating mode of the device is retrieved, wherein each of the stored option groups is associated with a respective operating mode and includes a respective plurality of functions for selection by a user during the respective operating mode. The current operating mode pertains not only to whether a telephone call is taking place but also to the number of digits that have been entered into the cellular telephone. The retrieved option group is displayed and the dial shuttle is utilized by the user to selected one of the displayed functions for execution.

Abstract: A technique for activating a cellular or portable telephone includes a circuit for transmitting and receiving signals, a controller for the transmitting and receiving circuit, and a display device, e.g., liquid crystal display. A service program stored in a memory is accessible through a first code and a second code. The first code permits access to portions of the service program, and the second code permits access to fewer portions of the service program. The second code is generated based upon data associated with the telephone, e.g., a serial number and/or the first code. The service program is prevented from being accessed through the second code after the second code is used once.

Abstract: A satellite communication system for transmitting a message between a mobile station and a stationary station through a communication satellite comprises a memory provided in a mobile station for previously storing a plurality of types of messages to be transmitted, and a unit provided in the stationary station for transmitting a command for modifying a message stored in the memory to the mobile station through the communication satellite to thereby modify the message stored in the memory.
