  • Patent number: 7094191
Abstract: A press roll is employed in the press section, calender section, etc., of a papermaking machine. The press roll includes a first tapered surface (11a) and a first clamping surface (12a). The first tapered surface (11a) is formed in the outer peripheral surface of the supporting head (11) and diminishes in outside diameter toward its axially outer end. The first clamping surface (12a) is formed in the inner peripheral surface of the clamping member (12) and coincides with the first tapered surface (11a). With the first tapered surface (11a) and the first clamping surface (12a), a blanket (10) is clamped on the first tapered surface (11a) in a perpendicular direction. In this way, the blanket (10) can be exchanged easily and uniformly in a short time.

  • Patent number: 5545295
Abstract: A web transfer system is disclosed which comprises an endless belt which has a first surface which is elastic and which is structured and arranged to come into direct contact with a web in a press section and a second surface which is not in contact with the web. The endless belt has an inner core, which is located between the first surface and the second surface. The inner core is made from a material which is less elastic than the first surface. The web transfer system also comprises a hard roll and at least one pressure roll which presses the endless belt into direct contact against the hard roll. When the endless belt is pressed against the hard roll, it is deformed so as to doff the web from the hard roll directly and convey the web with the endless belt. No suction force is imposed on the endless belt.

  • Patent number: 4808445
Abstract: A coating apparatus is disclosed for applying a coating material to the surface of a paper web. The coating apparatus includes a backing roll and an applicator roll which cooperates with the backing roll for defining therebetween a gap for the passage therethrough of the web. The backing roll and applicator roll counter-rotate at given speeds and a nip roll movably cooperates with the backing roll for defining therebetween a nip section. The nip section is disposed downstream relative to the gap such that the web extends progressively through the gap and through the nip section so that the coating material is applied to the surface of the web during passage of the web through the gap and nip section.

  • Patent number: 4714521
Abstract: The present invention relates to a twin wire former. It aims at resolving the difficulties with respect to the retention of fine raw material and the coupling strength in the thicknesswise direction of a paper sheet without deteriorating the formation and without causing problems associated with high speed operation. A top wire (34) is partly provided with a portion in which a water-impermeable belt (35) travels along the inside of its loop. Dewatering in this portion is effected only on one side, that is, on the side of the bottom wire (33). Also in this portion, wrapping angles for the wires (33) and (34) are varied by adjusting the positions of a plurality of rolls (3), (17) and (23) or shoes (14) and (18) to improve the formation, and thereafter, dewatering on the side where dewatering has been suppressed by the above-mentioned belt (35) is also effected.

  • Patent number: 4708773
Abstract: A novel apparatus for uniformly dispersing paper raw material in a paper making machine, in which a dewatering limit member impermeable to water is provided for covering two wires travelling along a curved surface of a wire support and for providing an adjustable urging force against the support, and thereby a dewatering limit region is defined such that the interval between the support and the dewatering limit member is decreased and then increased in a wedge-like manner along the direction of travelling of the wires.

  • Patent number: 4686004
Abstract: A twin-wire former for a paper machine which can produce paper of good formation over a wide range of basis weight and at a speed of wide variation essentially consisting of a top wire and a bottom wire. The bottom wire with a wet material thereon substantially horizontally travels. The top wire approaches the material from above and travels downward together with the bottom wire on the circumference of a supporting member provided in the loop of the bottom wire while pressing the material between the pair of wires. At the position of a force roll provided in the loop of the top wire, the pair of wires commence travelling upwardly through a suction box to a couch roll, where the pair of wires separate from each other. To adjust the wire contacting angle of the supporting member, and hence, to improve the formation of paper, each of a water receiver, the force roll and suction boxes and made movable.

  • Patent number: 4604164
Abstract: A headbox for a paper machine comprising a top plate and a bottom plate defining a chamber therebetween and a plurality of flow restraining elements disposed one above another in the chamber to define a plurality of paths spaced one above another therein. The top and bottom plates are connected to one end to a perforated plate defining an inlet for the chamber and approach each other as they approach an outlet for the chamber. Each element is removably connected at one end to the perforated plate, and the paths extend from the inlet to the outlet. Each element has a mildly corrugated upper surface and a mildly corrugated lower surface which approach each other until they terminate in a free end remote from the perforated plate. Those surfaces are substantially symmetrical to each other with respect to a center line of said element. Each element has a free end portion formed from an easily deformable material, such as rubber or plastics. The surfaces of each element define an angle of 1.degree. to 15.degree.

  • Patent number: 4504360
Abstract: A headbox for a paper-making machine having a flow rectifier which comprises a first flow control member disposed in a flow path and a second flow control member disposed in a downstream side of the first flow control member. Being in contact with the first flow control member, the second flow control member is so constituted that the flow stagnation phenomena generated by the first flow control member is eliminated by the second flow control member. In other words, a uniform flow rate distribution or speed is achieved across the outlet of the second flow control member by rapidly decelerating the flow therein.

  • Patent number: 4467536
Abstract: A roller arrangement for the dryer section of a multi-cylinder paper machine wherein two carrier belts are entrained, applied to each other to form a chimney through which air drafts pass. A seal roll is disposed between the runs of the belts to be driven by contact with one belt, while providing a slight gap between it and the other belt which moves in the same direction, so that a flow of air counter to the draft is created.

  • Patent number: 4425188
Abstract: A twin wire former of a paper making machine in which one of the wires is supported on a surface of each of a number of forming shoes longitudinally spaced along the extent of the wires. Each forming shoe has a number of longitudinally spaced grooves in the surface contacted by the one wire, each of the grooves extending in a direction at an angle to the longitudinal direction less than 90.degree., such that scraping pressure applied to the raw material liquid guided between the two wires, by the surface between the grooves is released into the grooves. This arrangement of grooves creates a pressure difference in the raw paper material liquid in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the wires to produce a transverse flow of the raw paper material liquid, thereby reducing the machine-direction to cross-machine-direction ratio of the fibers of the paper being formed.

  • Patent number: 4407330
Abstract: A pressure pulse damping device which is used in a liquid passage having a bottom flat wall. The flat wall has an opening therethrough with a flexible diaphragm positioned therein. The side of the diaphragm opposite the liquid passage is in communication with a gas chamber having gas therein. The diaphragm is movable such that the effective volume of the gas chamber is varied to ensure that the average pressure of the gas therein is substantially equal to the average pressure of liquid in the liquid passage.
