  • Patent number: 9359989
Abstract: A vehicle includes a starter used for starting an engine and including an actuator performing an engagement operation with a pinion gear and a motor rotating the pinion gear that are separately controllable. When starting the engine by the user's key operation, a start request signal caused by the key operation is delayed in a delay circuit to output a control signal for driving the motor. When restarting an engine after the engine is automatically stopped, a malfunction detection unit detects a malfunction in the delay circuit based on a control signal for driving the actuator and the control signal for driving the motor.

  • Patent number: 9109567
Abstract: A starter includes a pinion gear, an actuator for moving the pinion gear to a position where the pinion gear is engaged with a ring gear in a driven state, and a motor for rotating the pinion gear. An ECU includes a rotation mode in which the motor is driven before the actuator is driven and an engagement mode in which the actuator is driven before the motor is driven. In the engagement mode, the actuator is driven after lapse of a predetermined first time period since a decision to start an engine was made, and the motor is driven after lapse of a second time period longer than the first time period since the decision to start the engine was made. In the rotation mode, the motor is driven after lapse of the second time period since a decision to start the engine was made.

  • Patent number: 8714037
Abstract: A device for starting an engine includes a starter for starting the engine and an ECU. The starter includes a pinion gear for engagement with a ring gear for cranking the engine, an actuator structured to engage the pinion gear with a ring gear, and a motor for rotating the pinion gear. The actuator and the motor can individually be controlled. The ECU has a rotation mode for driving the motor prior to drive of the actuator and an engagement mode for causing the actuator to engage the pinion gear and the ring gear with each other prior to drive of the motor. When a request to start the engine is made, the ECU switches selection between the rotation mode and the engagement mode based on a rotation speed of the engine and a reduction rate in rotation speed of the engine.

  • Patent number: 8706387
Abstract: When a predetermined stop condition is satisfied, an engine is stopped. When a predetermined start condition is satisfied, a motor in a starter is driven and the engine is started. When a voltage of a battery for supplying electric power to the motor becomes lower than a threshold value while the motor is driven, stoppage of the engine is thereafter restricted. The threshold value increases as an engine rotation speed at the time when the motor is driven increases.

  • Patent number: 8695553
Abstract: A starter can independently drive an actuator for moving a pinion gear to a position where the pinion gear is engaged with a ring gear and a motor for rotating the pinion gear. When synchronization between the ring gear and the pinion gear is restricted, a rotation mode in which the pinion gear is rotated before the actuator is driven is restricted.

  • Patent number: 8631778
Abstract: A starter includes a pinion gear that can be engaged with a ring gear provided around an outer circumference of a flywheel or a drive plate of an engine, an actuator for moving the pinion gear to a position of engagement with the ring gear in a driven state, a helical spline for rotating the pinion gear in a reverse direction while the pinion gear moves toward the ring gear, and a motor for rotating the pinion gear. The actuator and the motor are individually controlled. After the actuator was driven and before the motor is driven, drive of the actuator is stopped.

  • Publication number: 20130104828
Abstract: A device for starting an engine includes a starter for starting the engine and an ECU for controlling the starter. The starter includes a pinion gear structured to engage with a ring gear coupled to a crankshaft of the engine, an actuator for moving the pinion gear to an engagement position with the ring gear, and a motor for rotating the pinion gear. The ECU can individually control each of the actuator and the motor. The ECU holds such a state that the motor is stopped and the actuator is driven during a stand-by period until a reference condition is satisfied after completion of start of the engine. Thus, when the engine stopped immediately after start, the engine can quickly be re-started.

  • Publication number: 20130019711
Abstract: In a vehicle including a starter for starting an engine, capable of controlling an actuator for an engagement operation of a pinion gear and a motor for rotating the pinion gear individually, an ECU drives the actuator when the rotational speed NE of the engine becomes lower than a reference rotational speed NEston, and drives the motor when a predetermined period has elapsed since the driving of the actuator is initiated. When the rotational speed exceeds reference rotational speed again during the predetermined period, the ECU delays the driving of the motor until the rotational speed becomes lower than reference rotational speed again, and a predetermined period has elapsed.
