    Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus for winding filaments to form a structure. The apparatus includes a carrier which mounts spools of fiber, a mandrel, and a guide element which directs fiber tows, comprising filaments from the spools, onto the mandrel. The system further includes a heating element which applies heat to the fiber tows, and a diaphragm element which defines an orifice about the mandrel. The diaphragm element includes one or more displaceable portions which define a physical dimension of the orifice and which: displace to vary the physical dimension of the orifice; and apply a predetermined pressure to the fiber tows disposed on the mandrel. Also disclosed and described is a related method.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for rapid mold tooling fabrication using active self-shaping non-Newtonian fluids is provided. The rapid mold fabrication system includes one or more molding units between which molds are formed using compression or injection molding process. Each molding unit includes an array of hydraulic pillars that controllably adjust the position of mold preform layers, and an expandable fluid chamber between the end of the pillars and the preform layer against which a mold is formed. A control system is also provided for controlling the volume of STF within the chamber and for transitioning the STF from a liquid to a solid phase through application of an electrical stimulus. A method is also provided for manufacturing a mold using the system. A method is also provided for measuring the geometric properties of objects using the rapid mold fabrication system.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for determining a damage value of one or more composite components and/or a vehicle using digital image correlation are disclosed. Digital image correlation is used to evaluate a displacement of one or more nanoparticles that are deposited on and/or embedded within the composite component. Digital image correlation is performed by identifying a first reference entry indicating a reference position of the one or more nanoparticles and correlating the first reference entry with sensor data of the composite component indicating a position of the one or more nanoparticles. The damage value of the composite component is determined based on the digital image correlation between the sensor data and the first reference entry.

The exemplary 3D printing system includes a primary extrusion nozzle system and a secondary extrusion needle system supported by a multi-axis truss. The primary extrusion nozzle system is comprised of at least two sub-extruders and rotation mechanisms for controllably rotating the extrusion nozzle and rotating the two-sub extruders. The extrusion nozzle assembly and the two sub-extruders can be controllably and independently rotated to extrude a braided yarn with a precise fiber-spacing. Additionally, a separate extrusion needle is provided for vertical interpenetration of the needle into the braided workpiece such that material can be extruded at precise depth through side-facing needle openings thereby providing z-axis reinforcement to the workpiece.

The method includes determining a damage value of the composite component based on the digital image correlation between the sensor data and the first reference entry.
