  • Patent number: 8175427
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for using a tunable optical source in safety curtain applications provide for enhanced operation of the safety curtain. In an embodiment, a safety curtain includes a transmit unit and a receive unit to operate as the safety curtain, where a single tunable light source generates different wavelengths of light and a single detector is used to detect the generated light.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 18, 2007
Date of Patent: May 8, 2012
    Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.
Inventors: Francis Lawrence Leard, Hassan R. Manjunath, James Edward Dogul

  • Publication number: 20080147356
Abstract: An apparatus and method for detecting behavior of one or more pieces of equipment of a system within a facility are disclosed. In at least one embodiment, the apparatus includes an array of acoustic sensors respectively positioned at a variety of respective locations within the facility, where each of the respective acoustic sensors detects respective sounds arriving at the respective sensor from the system, including the piece of equipment. The apparatus further includes a processing device coupled to the acoustic sensors of the array, where the processing device monitors sonic information provided by the acoustic sensors in response to the sounds detected by the acoustic sensors, and detects inappropriate behavior of the piece of equipment based upon the monitored sonic information.

  • Patent number: 7343062
Abstract: A safety light curtain comprises a light emitter and a first micro-machined electromechanical system (MEMS), wherein the first MEMS receives light emitted by the emitter and sequentially reflects the received light to a first plurality of light wave guides. A detector receives an optical signal relating to light from at least one of the first plurality of light wave guides, the optical signal received by the detector employed to control operation of a machine associated with the safety light curtain.

  • Patent number: 6937812
Abstract: An electronic device using total internal reflection to guide light from a light source housed within the electronic device to the surface of the device. The electronic device has a cover secured to a protective housing to form a protective enclosure for the electronic device. The cover is adapted to use total internal reflection to guide light through the cover to a plurality of surface portion of the cover. A second surface portion of the cover is adapted to totally internally reflect a first portion of the light to the first surface portion.
