  • Publication number: 20040202141
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for selecting an access point in a wireless communication system comprising mobile terminals and access points. To enable the mobile terminals to take into account the prevailing conditions within the entire coverage area of an access point more effectively than before, sets of attributes are sent from mobile terminals to the currently serving access point, each set to contain at least one attribute indicating the quality of a wireless link between the serving access point and the sending mobile terminal. Based on the sets, a service report describing current service conditions in the coverage area of the access point is formed and transmitted to at least one mobile terminal. This terminal examines the service report of at least one access point and, based on the examination, selects the access point to which a wireless link is to be established.

  • Patent number: 6603967
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a radio system and method for routing a subscriber's call via a moving base station. The radio system includes at least one moving base station. A moving location area is formed using the service areas of the moving base station. A control unit of at least one operator is dedicated to controlling the operation of the moving base stations belonging to the moving location area. Calls made by a subscriber in a service area of the moving base station are routed from the subscriber terminal via a moving base station, a relay satellite and a ground earth station to one dedicated control unit. Calls to a subscriber located in the moving location area are routed from one dedicated control unit via a ground earth station, a relay satellite and the moving base station to the subscriber terminal.

  • Patent number: 6600924
Abstract: A cell handover method and cellular radio system includes at least one indoor subscriber terminal (100) and cells (31 to 38) with operating area of each being confined to the interior of a building, and at least one outdoor cell (11) whose operating area extends from the exterior to the interior of the building, and in which cellular radio system the cell serving the subscriber terminal (100) will be changed, characterized in that the radio system is configured for cell handover in such a way that cells (31 to 38) are grouped into cell groups with a gateway cell (21 to 24) provided around each group, and with one gateway cell (21) provided at the entrance of the building, the gateway cell (21 to 24) surrounding the cell (31 to 38) is entered on the neighbor list of each cell (31 to 38), other gateway cells (22 to 24) and an outdoor cell (11) are entered on the neighbor list of the gateway cell (21) provided at the entrance, and the gateway cells (21 to 24) are entered on the neighbor list of the outdoor cell

  • Publication number: 20020059614
Abstract: A system and method for distributing digital content on-demand in a common carrier environment, such as an airplane, are disclosed. The present invention employs a combination of low power RF (e.g., WLAN/Bluetooth) and digital data broadcast (e.g., DVB-T) technology to distribute digital content to passengers in an airplane cabin. In an advantageous embodiment, a mobile multimedia terminal (or, alternatively, a fixed seat-back terminal), with a WLAN or Bluetooth link to a content server aboard the plane is used by a passenger to request digital content such as movies, music, games, etc. In response, the server transmits the requested content to the passenger's device via a DVB-T connection. The elimination of a wired connection for each of, for example, 400+ passengers in a Boeing 747, decreases the overall weight of the system and thus reduces fuel costs.
