    Abstract: An electrical cable connector assembly includes a connector and a cable. The connector includes a housing enclosing an insulator with contacts fixed thereto. The cable has a number of wires with leads electrically connected to the contacts. A plastic strain relief is fixedly attached to the cable by insert molding, and has two keys engagably received within two grooves defined by the housing. A metal strain relief is formed by stamping a metal sheet to have a hollow body portion and two fitting wings extending from opposite sides thereof. The body portion is crimped to be fixedly connected to the cable near the plastic strain relief. The wings are fittingly received between a stop wall and either a connecting post or sleeve formed on a lower housing member of the housing.

A grounding clip (26) is retainably attached to the corresponding audio jack unit (17) under the condition that one spring finger (38) thereof contacts the grounding contact (24) and an engagement tang (46) thereof projects out of the front surface (49) of the universal bracket (12) for efficient engagement with the front panel of the computer case which the bracket (12) confronts.

The terminals have insulation displacement sections defining a connecting face on said rear portion and insertion sections on said island portion. A carrier retaining a plurality of conductive wires in traverse slots thereof is assembled to the rear portion. A pair of wedges is formed on opposite ends of the carrier. A first EMI shield is assembled to the housing from a bottom thereof. A pair of retaining tabs upwardly extends from opposite ends of the shield. Each retaining tab defines an opening securely engaged with the corresponding wedge.

    Abstract: An adapter (10) includes a pair of male/female connectors (12, 14) solderably positioned on two ends of a PC board (16). A pair of identical metal shells (20) are adapted to be engaged with each other with their grounding tangs (38) extending at two ends thereof, respectively, for conductive engagement with the metal shieldings (60, 80) of such pair of connectors (12, 14). The metal shells (20) also defines a space for protectively enclosing the PC board (16) therein. A pair of identical plastic covers (40) are fixedly aligned and attached to each other commonly enclosing such pair of metal shells (20) therein. The metal shells (20) are restrained between the pair of connectors (12, 14), and fixedly aligned with the corresponding covers (40), respectively. The connectors (12, 14) are aligned with and confinably received within the covers (40). Two interconnection ports of such pair of connectors (12, 14) are respectively exposed to the exterior at opposite ends of the adapters (10).

A first pair of boardlocks (53) helpfully fasten the first connector (18) to the bracket (12) in the upper portion (14) thereof and a second pair of boardlocks (68) fasten the second connector (20) to the bracket (12) in the lower portion (16) thereof.

A cable containing a number of conductors has a joint end received within the casing to allow the conductors to be electrically connected to the connector body via a circuit board. The joint end of the cable has two opposite shoulders each having a front face and an opposite rear face to be snugly receive within a chamber defined within the casing by two spaced wall segments with the front and rear faces thereof in abutment relationship with the wall segments to provide resistance to external force acting upon the cable.

Some of such tangs (56, 64, 70) include embossments (84) or kinks (86) thereon for functions as retention means (70) and/or grounding means (56). A pair of spring grounding tangs (47) forward projecting out of the mating face (20) of the connector (11).

The latch (56) further comprises a rearward projecting extension (66) having a step-like leg (68) downward extending adjacent to the end of the extension (66) for adjustable compliance with the different PC boards (72) which the I/O connector (10) is attached to and electrically engaged with.

A pair of covers (40) sandwich therebetween and enclose therein the connector kit (12) and PC board (24) with a coupling section of the connector kit (12) protruding out an front opening (51) of the covers (40). The cable unit (80) comprises an engagement device which can incorporate a hollow (99) defined by two covers (40) to form strain relief means to resist improper pulling force applied to the cable connector assembly (10).
