Abstract: Systems and methods for rendering multimedia overlays in real-time augmented reality. The augmented reality system relates to image targets used for mapping virtual object overlays in either a semantic or non-semantic context in real-time projection when coupled with an electronic device having augmented reality software, a server, and an integrated image capture device. Target points are seamlessly integrated into a decorative image target that may have a tessellated pattern, charm, drawing, photograph, or other image comprising of an arrangement of tracking points and pixels. Augmented reality software and a server combined with an image capture device on an electronic device detect tracking and target points in an image target and then project multimedia virtual object overlays that may be customized and are not limited to a semantic context.
