    Abstract: A luminaire includes at least one light source, at least one reflector having a reflector cavity and an optical element positioned to receive light reflected from the at least one reflector cavity. The luminaire does not include a mask or other structure located within the opening of the luminaire that would partially occlude light exiting the luminaire—light can thus exit the luminaire unimpeded. In some embodiments, the at least one reflector cavity is semi toroidal. Moreover, in some embodiments, the optical element includes a reflective optical element, a refractive optical element or a combination thereof. Methods of lighting a surface are also described.
