  • Patent number: 6489707
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating and emitting amplified coherent acoustic energy. A cylindrical transducer is mounted within a housing, the transducer having an acoustically open end and an acoustically closed end. The interior of the transducer is filled with an active medium which may include scattering nuclei. Excitation of the transducer produces radially directed acoustic energy in the active medium, which is converted by the dimensions of the transducer, the acoustically closed end thereof, and the scattering nuclei, to amplified coherent acoustic energy directed longitudinally within the transducer. The energy is emitted through the acoustically open end of the transducer. The emitted energy can be used for, among other things, effecting a chemical reaction or removing scale from the interior walls of containment vessels.

  • Patent number: 4950986
Abstract: A gap sensor comprising a C-type core (38, 62, 126) wrapped with a coil (44, 68, 130), and arranged to be responsive to the variable reluctance in a magnetic circuit passing through the core, two refiner plates (28a, 28b, 194, 198) and the gap (34, 90) between the plates. The two sensing ends (134, 136) of the transducer core legs (128, 132) are positioned in close proximity to the circumferential surfaces, or rims (82, 86, 212, 214) of the two spaced apart refiner plates, respectively. The magnetic field generated by the coil follows a magnetic path or circuit including the core (38), the radial gaps (46), between the sensor and the discs (16, 18), the refiner disc material, the plates (28a, 28b) mounted on the disc, and the clearance gap (34) between the two refiner plates.

  • Patent number: 4826217
Abstract: A joint between a pair of coaxial tubes which extend into a pressure vessel from a surface is sealed using a sleeve-like housing which surrounds the joint to be sealed. An upper fluid-tight seal is formed between the longer of the tubes and the housing. A lower fluid-tight seal is formed between the housing and the surface. An intermediate seal is also formed between the housing and the shorter tube. The upper and lower seals are independently preloaded through the use of spring washers. Primary loading of the lower seal to the surface is caused by fluid pressure in the vessel which acts on the housing.

  • Patent number: 4611813
Abstract: Leakage producing faults in a guide tube of finite length are repaired by encapsulating the guide tube within a sleeve-like member which extends between a wall, from which the guide tube projects, and a housing which passes through the guide tube and extends beyond the end thereof. The sleeve-like member has resilient seals at the ends thereof, is pre-loaded to partially compress the seals and is shaped so that exposure thereof to a pressurized fluid will result in further compression of the seals.
