A base station enables synchronization of a mobile station configured for receiving, via a sync channel, a sync channel message, based on sending a first sync channel message on the sync channel specifying a first protocol (P_REV=5), and sending a second sync channel message (ESPM) on a common channel (PCH) specifying a second protocol (P_REV=7), enabling the mobile station to synchronize according to one of the first and second protocols based on decoding a corresponding one of the first and second sync channel messages.
