The apparatus for providing a user interface, includes a controller operating such that a lock image with respect to at least a partial user interface and an object for changing a lock state to a release state are displayed on a screen, and a touch sensor sensing a first contact of a touch gesture on the object, wherein the controller determines a distance between the object and a second contact of the touch gesture with respect to the first contact on the object, and changes the lock state to the release state and the removes the lock image from the screen when the distance between the object and the second contact of the touch gesture is greater than a preset threshold.

The method allows for executing functions of an activated application by a tap on a specific area of the touchscreen. An onscreen function execution method of the present invention includes mapping active regions of the touchscreen to functions of at least one application, displaying an application screen in response to an application activation command and executing, if a tap is detected on one of the active regions, a function mapped to the application activation command.
