The method includes determining the current total loss torque acting on the drive train, determining the deactivation dead time of the at least one deactivatable secondary assembly, estimating the total loss torque resulting after passage of the deactivation dead time, and deactivating the at least one deactivatable secondary assembly if a predefined maximum torque threshold is exceeded by the estimated total loss torque.
