  • Patent number: 9178331
Abstract: According to an embodiment of the invention, there is provided a micro integratable tunable laser assembly (m-ITLA) which includes an electrical interface for interfacing with a host, a tunable laser module for conducting optical communication, and a control unit, for at least controlling operation of the tunable laser module according to information received from the host via the electrical interface. The m-ITLA can have a length of about 37 mm or less and a width of about 20 mm or less.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 7322754
Abstract: The invention relates to a compact transmitter optical sub-assembly (OSA), which can be used in small form factor optical transceivers. To limit back reflections from entering the laser cavity, the laser is disposed on a silicon optical bench (SiOB) at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the OSA. A portion of the light from the laser cavity passes through the back end of the laser cavity for measuring by a monitor photodiode. A rear beam steering lens redirects the portion of light into a v-groove in the SiOB and off of a reflective surface formed in the end thereof to the monitor photodiode, which is positioned face down over the v-groove.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 9, 2005
Date of Patent: January 29, 2008
    Assignee: JDS Uniphase Corporation
Inventors: Robert K. Wolf, Hui Fu, Anthony T. Yesenofski, Chris Hart, Erji Mao, Heino Bukkems, William K. Hogan

  • Patent number: 6687267
Abstract: A tunable laser having a tunable multi-mode interference (MMI) section is provided. The tunable laser also includes a gain section including an active waveguide, a phase section including a transparent waveguide, and a sampled grating section including a waveguide having a sampled Bragg grating written thereon or below. Each section is controlled via current injection. More specifically, the MMI section provides coarse tuning, the sampled grating section provides medium tuning, and the phase section provides fine tuning independence upon a current injected thereinto. The gain section provides optical gain. The configuration is relatively simple to control and easy to fabricate.
