  • Publication number: 20240017321
Abstract: A cooling pad for a belt casting system includes a first nozzle arrangement and a second nozzle arrangement. In some embodiments, the first nozzle arrangement includes an elongated nozzle assembly that includes a base defining a receiving area, a first insert positionable within the receiving area, and a second insert positionable within the receiving area. The first insert and the base together define a first elongated dispensing slot. The second insert is adjustable relative to the first insert, and the second insert and the base together define a second elongated dispensing slot. In various embodiments, the second nozzle arrangement includes a plurality of multi-position nozzles, each movable between a base position and an offset position such that the heat transfer rate may be locally controlled across the cooling cavity.

  • Publication number: 20150247203
Abstract: A cDNA array (9984 genes) was used for expression profiling in rectal adenocarcinoma. The expression data were correlated to responsiveness to chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. A set of 54 genes was found that were differentially expressed in responders vs. non-responders. The genes may be used as prognostic markers for determining whether a rectal adenocarcinoma is responsive to radiohemotherapy.

  • Patent number: 8961864
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the invention include a method and apparatus for cooling a metal strip that is being advanced in a generally horizontal fashion. The method involves delivering a coolant liquid onto a lower surface of the strip from below across the entire width of the strip, preventing the coolant liquid from contacting the upper surface of the strip, and optionally subsequently removing the coolant liquid from the lower surface. The coolant liquid is prevented from contacting the upper surface by forming a gas-directing channel immediately above the upper surface of the strip adjacent to one or preferably both lateral edges of the strip and forcing a gas through the channel in a direction generally away from a center of the strip towards the one or both lateral edges to deflect coolant liquid away from the upper surface of the strip. The apparatus provides means for carrying out these steps.

  • Patent number: 5944655
Abstract: In a 3D video endoscope, two lenses are disposed at the front end of a shank portion at a certain squint angle providing for two separate beam paths in each of which an optical switch is disposed and the switches are so controlled that they are alternately transparent and opaque, one being transparent, while the other is opaque, and a beam deflection arrangement is disposed in the beam paths for directing the beams along a single axis into an opto-electronic camera which provides electrical output signals representing alternately the pictures generated by the two front lenses.

  • Patent number: 5236731
Abstract: The invention concerns a process for the manufacture of a sliceable, casing-free sausage, in which first a rigid, inflexible jacket is filled with sausage mixture, the jacket is closed at its first and second ends, and then heated, preferably in steam-heated air or hot water, thus coagulating the sausage mixture, and the jacket is thereafter cooled. The closed jacket is opened at one end and applied to a slicing machine, whereupon the finished sausage located in the jacket is pushed forward out of the jacket through its now-open end, and is cut in slices at this end. Moreover, the invention concerns a mechanism to carry out this process. Thanks to the invention there is no unsalable outside piece of the sausage at the ends, and no casing has to be removed before slicing. The elimination of the need for casing saves the costs associated with the manufacture and disposal of casing.

  • Patent number: 4564334
Abstract: The follow-up guide wheels of a multistage centrifugal pump define flow paths whose cross-sectional area increases exclusively in the axial direction of the respective stages, or axially and radially inwardly, to thus allow for a reduction of the outer diameters of the guide wheels without reducing the efficiency of the pump.

  • Patent number: 4437206
Abstract: A resuable tubular casing is made of porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane for the production of caseless (skinless) parboil or raw sausages. The membrane has a micro-structure comprising PTFE nodes connected by PTFE fibrils with a porosity of about 70-80%, a Gurley No. less than about 28 seconds, a Bubble Point Pressure greater than about 13, and a Water Entry Pressure greater than about 40 psig. The casing is contacted on at least a part of its circumferential area by a porous support such as a cylindrical lattice. A new process for production of parboil or raw sausage involves heating the sausage in casing formed by a reusable non-adherent, vapor permeable membrane to drive off moisture and other volatile materials, and removing the sausage from the casing. The sausage can subsequently be smoked and the casing reused.

  • Patent number: 4406583
Abstract: A centrifugal pump comprises a casing which has two volutes disposed substantially diametrically opposite each other in such a way that the end of the first volute is adjacent to the start of the second volute. The outer diameter of the casing approximates or equals the diameter of the first volute in the region of the end of the first volute. This contributes to compactness of the casing. The volutes surround a rotary impeller or a guide wheel which is installed in the casing downstream of the impeller. Each volute extends along an arc of at most 180 degrees. The casing can have one or more elongated channels extending from the end of the first volute, along the second volute, and to a common outlet nozzle for both volutes.

  • Patent number: 4383800
Abstract: The double volute casing of a centrifugal pump has a main portion which has first and second volutes extending along arcs of not more than 180 degrees. The outer diameter of the main portion equals or approximates the outer diameter of the end of the first volute, and such end is adjacent to the start of the second volute whose end communicates with an outlet nozzle of the main portion. The latter has two channels which flank the second volute and extend between the end of the first volute and the outlet nozzle. The inner sides of the channels are open and face the axial passage of the main portion. Such inner sides are sealed from the axial passage by tubular inserts which are installed in and are separably fastened to the main portion of the casing. The passage receives a single-suction or a double-suction impeller or a stationary guide wheel which is located downstream of the impeller. The main portion of the casing is a one-piece casting.

  • Patent number: 4371223
Abstract: Cabinet doors are supported by a hinge system that allows the doors to swing into an open space below the cabinet as they are opened. The hinge also reduces the room that must be provided in front of the cabinet to open the door. The door is mounted on hinge bars pivotally connected to a slide that rides on runners inside the cabinet. In the closed position, the bars rest on support pegs extending from the sides of the cabinet. As the door is moved forward, the hinge bars can pivot about the support pegs and the door can swing into the open space beneath the cabinet. Pivot pegs extend from each side of the cabinet in front of and below the support pegs, and the hinge bars contact the pivot pegs as the hinge bars pivot about the support pegs. The hinge bars then pivot about the pivot pegs, which control and limit the motion of the door as it moves into the fully open position.

  • Patent number: 4341836
Abstract: The invention relates to a surfacing for sports areas, more particularly tennis courts in which a bearing layer (2,2a) is applied to a surface (1) , fragments are then secured by means of the said bearing layer (2,2a) and arranged to leave voids and a top covering (4) of fine grains is applied. A process for preparing the surfacing may comprise a curable liquid resin that is cast as the bearing layer up to a thickness of about three to four millimeters on the surface and raked off. Fragments are about two-thirds embedded in the bearing layer and after curing a covering layer of fine grains is applied.

  • Patent number: 4208169
Abstract: A radial or semiaxial impeller for centrifugal pumps has an annulus of vanes whose inlet edges are disposed at the periphery of a circle and are bounded by convex transition surfaces having small radii of curvature. The inner portions of the suction sides of vanes are bounded by flat or slightly curved surfaces which merge gradually into concave surfaces bounding the outer portions of the respective suction sides. The length of each flat or slightly curved surface is between 3 millimeters and the vane pitch. The ratio of the radii of curvature of transition surfaces at the inlet edges of the vanes to the vane pitch is between 0.0035 and 0.04 and/or the ratio of these radii to the average thickness of the inlet portion of a conventional vane is between 0.04 and 0.50. Such construction of the vanes reduces the likelihood of excessive erosion as a result of cavitation.
