Publication number: 20170323691Abstract: A nuclear fusion reactor includes a geodesic-shaped reaction chamber having at least j planar faces, where j equals 2, 6, 8, 12 or 20 and j conical plasma injectors (CPIs) for creating circular rings of neutral plasma. Each CPI includes a conical inner cathode electrode disposed coaxially within a hollow conical outer anode electrode, the space between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode forming a converging conical plasma channel for creating circular rings of neutral plasma, the converging conical plasma channel accelerating the plasma fuel into a converging plasma ring that comes to a focus at the center of the reaction chamber. The angle between axes of adjacent CPIs defines a CPI face angle, the angle defined by the converging conical plasma channel at its apex defining a CPI convergence angle, wherein the CPI convergence angle is approximately half the CPI face angle.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 10, 2016Publication date: November 9, 2017Inventors: Richard Gorski, Heinz Busta, Boris Rozansky, Hsing Yao Chen

Publication number: 20080093691Abstract: A MEM device and method for fabricating a MEM device. A MEM device comprising a lever mechanism residing along a substrate is disclosed. A contact material is deposited on a first surface of the lever mechanism. In one arrangement, the first surface is disposed towards the substrate. A first contact region may be deposited on the substrate. The first contact region attracts the lever mechanism towards the substrate such that the contact material becomes operationally coupled to a second contact region. The MEM device may also comprise a first anchor portion and a second anchor portion. The first and second anchor portions may be integral to a top surface of the substrate. Aspects of the invention are also particularly useful in providing an encapsulated MEM switching device.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2007Publication date: April 24, 2008Inventor: Heinz Busta

Publication number: 20080095315Abstract: A method of operating and process for fabricating an electron source. A conductive rod is covered by an insulating layer, by dipping the rod in an insulation solution, for example. The rod is then covered by a field emitter material to form a layered conductive rod. The rod may also be covered by a second insulating material. Next, the materials are removed from the end of the rod and the insulating layers are recessed with respect to the field emitter layer so that a gap is present between the field emitter layer and the rod. The layered rod may be operated as an electron source within a vacuum tube by applying a positive bias to the rod with respect to the field emitter material and applying a higher positive bias to an anode opposite the rod in the tube. Electrons will accelerate to the charged anode and generate soft X-rays.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2007Publication date: April 24, 2008Inventor: Heinz Busta

Publication number: 20080008294Abstract: An improved x-ray generation system produces a converging or diverging radiation pattern particularly suited for substantially cylindrical or spherical treatment devices. In an embodiment, the system comprises a closed or concave outer wall about a closed or concave inner wall. An electron emitter is situated on the inside surface of the outer wall, while a target film is situated on the outside surface of the inner wall. An extraction voltage at the emitter extracts electrons which are accelerated toward the inner wall by an acceleration voltage. Alternately, electron emission may be by thermionic means. Collisions of electrons with the target film causes x-ray emission, a substantial portion of which is directed through the inner wall into the space defined within. In an embodiment, the location of the emitter and target film are reversed, establishing a reflective rather than transmissive mode for convergent patterns and a transmissive mode for divergent patterns.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2007Publication date: January 10, 2008Applicant: Cabot Microelectronics CorporationInventors: Stanley Lesiak, Heinz Busta, Bruce Zwicker

Publication number: 20060273871Abstract: An improved microelectromechanical switch assembly comprises a linearly movable switch rod constrained via a switch bearing, the switch rod being actuated by electrostatic deflection. Movement of the switch rod to one end of its travel puts the switch assembly in a closed state while movement of the switch rod to the other end of its travel puts the switch assembly in an open state. In an embodiment of the invention, one or both of the switch rod and the switch bearing are fabricated of a carbon nanotube. The improved microelectromechanical switch assembly provides low insertion loss and long lifetime in an embodiment of the invention.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2005Publication date: December 7, 2006Inventors: Heinz Busta, Ian Wylie, Gary Snider

Publication number: 20060049359Abstract: A novel x-ray treatment system utilizes one or more large area flat panel sources of x-ray radiation directed into a target zone. A target substance within the target zone is irradiated with x-ray radiation from the one or more flat panel sources, reducing the biological effects of a contaminant presence therein. The flat panel source comprises an electron source, an electron accelerator, and an electron target medium. The electron source may emit electrons either via field emission or thermionic emission. The x-ray source may operate in transmissive, reflective, or combined transmissive/reflective mode. The use of large area flat panel x-ray sources in the inventive systems allows for decreased installation and operational costs as well as increased efficiency.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2005Publication date: March 9, 2006Applicant: Cabot Microelectronics CorporationInventors: Heinz Busta, Stanley Lesiak

Publication number: 20050276143Abstract: An improved high-density digital storage device uses placement of mobile ions within a memory layer to record digital data. In an embodiment of the invention, the mobile ions comprise sodium ions or other alkali metal ions implanted in a silicon oxide memory layer. In a further embodiment of the invention, a scanning nanotip array is used to position the mobile ions via an electric field as well as to read the positions of the mobile ions. In a further embodiment of the invention, a grid-addressable array of transistors is used to provide scanning tips.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 27, 2004Publication date: December 15, 2005Applicant: Cabot Microelectronics CorporationInventor: Heinz Busta

Publication number: 20050078104Abstract: A tiled display device is formed from display tiles having picture element (pixel) positions defined up to the edge of the tiles. Each tile includes a memory which stores display data, and pixel driving circuitry which controls the scanning and illumination of the pixels on the tile. The tiles are formed in two parts, an electronics section and a display section. Each of these parts includes connecting pads which cover several pixel positions. Each connecting pad makes an electrical connection to only one row electrode or column electrode. The connecting pads on the display section are electrically connected and physically joined to corresponding connecting pads on the electronics section to form a complete tile.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 1, 2004Publication date: April 14, 2005Inventors: Dennis Matthies, Roger Stewart, James Atherton, Dennis Bechis, Heinz Busta, Zilan Shen

Publication number: 20050067612Abstract: A current-controlling device comprising a first conductor, a second conductor, and a tunneling barrier comprising a first insulating layer between the first conductor and the second conductor. The tunneling barrier electrically isolates the first conductor from the second conductor. At least one mobile charge is positionable within the tunneling barrier. The device also includes a gate, wherein a voltage applied to the gate with respect to the substrate (or with respect to a second gate formed on or in the substrate) modulates or moves the mobile charge to a position between the first conductor and the second conductor within the tunneling barrier, thus deforming the shape of the energy barrier between the first conductor and the second conductor. The deformation can cause a current to flow between the conductors when a voltage is present between them due to quantum mechanical tunneling.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2003Publication date: March 31, 2005Inventors: Heinz Busta, J. Steckenrider
