    Abstract: The invention relates to an inflatable side impact protection system for an occupant of a vehicle having a side-panel and a window section in the side-panel. The protection system comprises a gas bag which when packed has a specific pack length, a gas generator for inflating the gas bag, and a side-panel covering. The window section is provided which has a lower edge, the side-panel covering having an upper end piece which terminates the covering at the lower edge of the window section. The gas bag when packed is arranged under the end piece and in a deployed state covers the vehicle side panel over a large area for protecting at least one of the thorax and pelvic region of the occupant. The end piece is constructed, at least over sections, as a flap which, when swung open, defines a downward pointing ejection channel for the gas bag.

    Abstract: A protective system is proposed for an optimum protection of a vehicle occupant against lateral effects, which consists of a plurality of elements combined with each other. An inflatable protective cushion (18) which is supported on the side structure of the vehicle and is inflated to be very hard is provided in the pelvic region. Above it, integrated into the inner covering of the door is an impact body (14) which extends between the door rail and the arm rest. A further inflatable protective cushion (24) at the level of the door rail provides an increased protection in the thorax region in cooperation with a releasable covering part (22) acting as an impact plate. A third inflatable protective cushion (32) is provided for the head region.

The head gas bag is arranged underneath the cladding part in the folded state extended in a longitudinal direction substantially parallel to the roof frame and only folded in a direction transversely to the longitudinal direction. The mounting members serve to attach the head gas bag at least at the outer end portions to the roof frame.

    Abstract: An inflatable gas bag for restraining systems in vehicles consists of a jacket portion and two side portions sewn thereto. A fold is arranged on the one side portion. The fold is separated from the remaining part of the gas bag by a seam along a separating line extending transversely of the ejection direction. The seam is so dimensioned in its tearing strength that on reaching a predetermined value of the gas bag internal pressure the fold tears. By the fold the expansion direction of the gas bag can be controlled within a relatively wide range. At the same time in desired manner the ejection width and ejection velocity are reduced. Finally, the fold also controls a relief opening which is formed in one of the superimposed wall portions of the fold.
