  • Patent number: 8146945
Abstract: A motor vehicle steering column includes a bracket fixed to the vehicle and a steering column tube. The steering column tube may be adjusted in inclination relative to the bracket fixed to the vehicle via an adjusting device. The adjusting device includes a lever which is mounted pivotably on the bracket and may be deflected about a pivot axis by a driving device. The motor vehicle steering column may permit a maximum inclination setting irrespective of the available construction space. A deflecting clamp which is connected pivotably to the steering column tube is coupled to an output end of the lever.

  • Patent number: 5842738
Abstract: A headrest for a vehicle seat is provided with a supporting loop and a head cushion mounted thereon and pivotable in a direction of a seat bottom. An adjusting device activated in the event of a collision is provided for displacing the head cushion relative to the supporting loop in such fashion that the head cushion directly abuts the nape of the neck and the back of the seat occupant's head. To improve head support comfort by provision for individual adjustment of the head support contour to the needs of the seat occupant when asleep, the adjusting device is additionally equipped with a manual operating member that permits changing the setting of the head cushion without adversely affecting the protective function of the head cushion in the event of a collision.

  • Patent number: 5749601
Abstract: A belt force limiter for a vehicle seat belt is mounted fixed to the vehicle by one end and, at its opposite free end, secures the shoulder strap approximately at shoulder level. The shoulder strap is displaced forward in relation to the vehicle seat with a limited amount of travel by the belt force limiter when tensile loading occurs due to a crash, tensile energy being absorbed in the belt force limiter. The belt force limiter has a pivot lever which is linked to an energy-absorbing component and in the position of rest is aligned approximately vertically and whose free end can be pivoted forward by the tension on the shoulder strap in the event of a crash, as a result of which the energy-absorbing component is deformed in an energy-absorbing manner.

  • Patent number: 5718448
Abstract: Protective devices, which operate on the basis of impact and catch systems, including those of the inflatable gas bag type, require the vehicle either to be closed in order to accommodate the requisite components in the roof framework or the columns in which this framework is supported, or a steering wheel hub sufficiently large to accommodate the gas bag with the gas generator. Neither of which are available in motor racing vehicles. Therefore, a gas bag is inserted in a hose-shaped, folded state in a slit along the front region of the rim of an open cockpit. This gas bag can be brought immediately over and back across the steering wheel via a pulling mechanism into a position between the driver and steering wheel in the event of a vehicle collision.

  • Patent number: 5301978
Abstract: A protective device for motor vehicle airbag systems to protect the vehicle occupants utilizes a vessel whose wall piece, which can break out, is configured as part of the wall of a hollow valve block provided with the outflow orifice. The wall piece is equipped with an extension projecting into the interior of a valve block. The piston rod is guided displaceably, transversely relative to the extension in the valve block, and moved by a pyrotechnic propellent charge. The rod serves to break out the wall part and is provided with a collar which, in the event of ignition, strikes against the extension and thus leads not to a violent breaking-out, but to a pivoting of the wall piece before the final breaking-out.

  • Patent number: 5226668
Abstract: A pressure vessel for storing a gas for use in airbag protection systems in passenger transport has an outflow valve connected to the housing of the pressure vessel at a predetermined breaking zone and contains a piston which extends to a pyrotechnic system arranged in the vessel interior. Influencing the outflow characteristic of the gas flowing out of a pressure vessel into an airbag in a controlled manner during the opening movement of the outflow valve is attained because the outflow valve contains a control body which adjoins the predetermined breaking zone and extends in the direction of the pyrotechnic system and the cross-section of which changes in the axial direction of the outflow valve.

  • Patent number: 4978139
Abstract: In an energy absorbing damping device for safety belts of motor vehicles, for the purpose of controlled reduction of the deceleration force which acts on the belt user in the event of a collision, a strip element, which is connected to the safety belt, is pulled out of a coil and, by plastically deformed deformation members arranged on both sides of the strip element. The deformation members are formed as two toothed rollers, which engage with one another, so that the strip element, as it is pulled out of the coil, is first deformed sectionally and subsequently pulled straight again.

  • Patent number: 4702492
Abstract: A seat belt system is disclosed having a triggering element that is set to a certain deceleration value and the signal of which, via a lock switch that is opened when the latch of the seat belt is engaged and via a pull switch closing at a certain pulling force that is applied to the seat belt by the user, triggers one indicating element respectively, such as a fuse, according to the position of the switches. The lock switch and the pull switch as well as the indicating elements are inaccessibly arranged in the belt buckle. From the combination of triggered or untriggered indicating elements, it can be concluded whether the seat belt was put on functionally correctly or had not been put on and whether manipulations took place at the belt buckle by means of electrical signals or mechanical forces.

  • Patent number: 4700974
Abstract: A triggering arrangement is described for restraint systems in motor vehicles, in which, in a joint, metallic electromagnetically shielding housing arranged directly at the restraint system, all elements of the triggering arrangement are integrated, including a separate power supply unit. Outside said housing, no electrical leads are required, resulting in an extensive shielding from electromagnetic interference signals and a high saving of costs. Contemplated usage includes with are airbags, belt tighteners, etc., in the case of seats that are firmly anchored to the vehicle, and also in the case of removable seats and seats for children.
