  • Patent number: 3980338
Abstract: Water is discharged from spray nozzles toward cutting tools of a drum-cutting mining machine only during the actual time when material is released from the face of a mine. A pulse generator is driven by the traversing drive of the mining machine. The pulse output is fed to a controller which may include a computer that also receives an enabling signal produced by the secondary winding of a transformer in the power supply lines for the drive motor which is used to rotate the cutting drums of the mining machine. The enabling signal indicates an actual mining operation on the basis of the flow of current to the drive motor about a predetermined idle current load. Additional signals are fed to the controller such as a signal representing properties of the mine materials, and a signal representing characteristics of the drive system for the mining machine such as the dimensions of the capstan's chain drive wheel.

  • Patent number: 3967180
Abstract: Low voltage direct current power is provided on a mining machine that is supplied with high voltage alternating current by an external power cable. An intrinsically-safe battery is charged by a battery charger that is powered through a stepdown transformer by the high voltage current supplied to the machine only during the actual operation thereof. The battery powers two separate electrical systems and in one system low voltage current continuously powers essential electrical devices that must remain functional even though the mining machine is not performing a mining operation. The other electrical system powers electrical devices that are essentially operative only when the mining machine is operative and this system is automatically deenergized by a relay in the high voltage current supply line.

  • Patent number: 3940754
Abstract: An electric drive motor for an underground mining machine includes a capacitive-type detector supported within the motor housing for contact by fluid that may penetrate beyond the motor shaft seals and the like. The capacitance of the detector decreases when fluids penetrate the motor shaft seals and electrical circuitry detects such a capacitance change of the detector for indicating the presence of fluids within the motor housing to prevent damage to the motor windings. The disclosure includes several forms and arrangements of the detector for the electric motor.
