Publication number: 20090146522Abstract: An electric servomotor for a power-assisted steering system in a vehicle has a stator laminated core having an outer diameter and an active length. In order to provide an electric servomotor for a power-assisted steering system that has an optimum diameter/length ratio and that covers a steering performance range from compact cars to full-size vehicles using a reasonable change in volume, it is provided that, with a constant outer diameter, the ratio of the outer diameter to the active length of the stator laminated core can be varied such that the electric servomotor can be used for power-assisted steering systems for compact cars up to full-size cars and the outer diameter is constant.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 19, 2008Publication date: June 11, 2009Inventors: Helmut Knoedler, Wilfried Leutner, Joerg Mayer, Michael Ochs, Thomas Kuehnhoefer, Wolfgang Runge

Patent number: 7364005Abstract: A steering system for a vehicle includes a shaft that is rotatably mounted on a frame in a bearing, the shaft being functionally linked with a steered wheel for adjusting the steering angle thereof, and a structure for axially positioning the shaft in the frame. In order to allow for the shaft of the steering system to be free of backlash in an inexpensive and simple manner, the structure for axially positioning the shaft is configured as a pressure pad which is axially supported on the frame and on the bearing sitting on the shaft without play and which retains the bearing on the frame.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2006Date of Patent: April 29, 2008Assignee: ZF Lenksysteme GmbHInventors: Martin Budaker, Ralf Dangelmaier, Michael Schmidt, Helmut Knoedler, Jüergen Bieber

Patent number: 7232006Abstract: A steer-by-wire steering system has a steering wheel actuator and a braking device that acts on the steering column. The braking device is activated when the vehicle steering wheel is to be blocked or at least sharply braked, such as when the steering stop is reached or a wheel goes over the edge of a curb. The braking device functions like a switchable freewheel.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2006Date of Patent: June 19, 2007Assignees: Robert Bosch GmbH, ZF Lenksysteme GmbHInventors: Peter Dominke, Chi-Thuan Cao, Wolfgang Pfeiffer, Klaus-Dieter Leimbach, Werner Harter, Jens Hafermalz, Helmut Knoedler, Wilfried Leutner, Juergen Schuele, Herbert Lohner

Publication number: 20060278465Abstract: The invention relates to a steering system (1) for a vehicle, comprising a shaft (4) that is rotatably mounted on a frame (3) in a bearing (2), said shaft being functionally linked with a steered wheel for adjusting the steering angle thereof, and a means (5) for axially positioning the shaft (4) in the frame (3). In order to allow for the shaft (4) of the steering system (1) to be free of backlash in an inexpensive and simple manner, the means (5) for axially positioning the shaft (4) is configured as a pressure pad (6) which is axially supported on the frame (3) and on the bearing (2) sitting on the shaft (4) without play and which retains the bearing (2) on the frame (3).Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2006Publication date: December 14, 2006Applicant: ZF Lenksysteme GmbHInventors: Martin Budaker, Ralf Dangelmaier, Michael Schmidt, Helmut Knoedler, Juergen Bieber

Patent number: 7140465Abstract: A steer-by-wire steering system is proposed, having a steering wheel actuator and a braking device that acts on the steering column (3). The braking device is activated when the vehicle steering wheel is to be blocked or at least sharply braked, such as when the steering stop is reached or a wheel goes over the edge of a curb. The braking device functions like a switchable freewheel.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2001Date of Patent: November 28, 2006Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Peter Dominke, Chi-Thuan Cao, Wolfgang Pfeiffer, Klaus-Dieter Leimbach, Werner Harter, Jens Hafermalz, Helmut Knoedler, Wilfried Leutner, Juergen Schuele, Herbert Lohner

Patent number: 6948584Abstract: A steering system, e.g., a hydraulic rack and pinion steering system for motor vehicles, includes a steering handle for prescribing a steering intention, a pressure medium source and a control valve device for controlling a flow of pressure medium to and from a servomotor in order to deflect vehicle wheels. The control valve device has a closed center, and a pressure medium accumulator is provided for producing and/or assisting a flow of pressure medium to and from the servomotor.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2002Date of Patent: September 27, 2005Assignee: ZF Lenksysteme GmbHInventors: Martin Budaker, Wilfried Leutner, Helmut Knoedler

Patent number: 4258584Abstract: A worm gear is provided having a rotary worm screw which drives a reciprocal ball nut by means of a ball chain with coacting helical channeling effecting a raceway between the worm screw and ball nut. The invention resides in providing a ball return member in the interior of the worm screw such that a smaller number of balls in the ball chain may be used than has heretofore been possible in the prior art, and wherein friction is substantially reduced by the use of a smaller ball return channel in a median plane of the ball return member connecting at its ends with radial inlet and outlet channels. A considerable reduction in friction is achieved by the use of novel plastic bushings at the entrance and exit openings into the ball return member which greatly reduces the wear on the components.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1978Date of Patent: March 31, 1981Assignee: Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen, AG.Inventors: Gerhard Haegele, Helmut Knoedler
