Abstract: A process for the preparation of a phenylglyocylic acid ester of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents alkyl,X represents halogen, alkyl, halogenoalkyl, alkoxy or nitro, andn represents 0, 1, 2, or 3by contacting a benzoyl cyanide of the formula ##STR2## wherein X and n have the meanings stated above, in a sulphuric acid/water system in the presence of chloride ions at a temperature between 0.degree. and 70.degree. C. to form phenylglyoxylic acid amide and reacting the phenylglyoxylic acid amide without isolation with an alcohol of the formula R.sup.1 -OH, wherein R.sup.1 has the meaning stated above, optionally in the presence of a diluent, at a temperature between 40.degree. and 100.degree. C.

Abstract: The herbicidal 3,6-substituted 4-amino-1,2,4-triazin-5-one of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 have the meaning given in the description,is obtained in good yields by a new two-stage cyclization reaction if an .alpha.-ketocarboxylic acid amide of the general formulaR.sup.1 --CO--CO--NHR.sup.3 (II)is reacted with a hydrazidine of the general formula ##STR2## if appropriate in the presence of a diluent at temperatures between 0.degree. and 150.degree. C., whereby in the first process stage a condensation reaction takes place to give condensation products which still have open chains, and in the second process stage an elimination reaction with ring closure takes place to give the end product of formula (I).

Abstract: New heterocyclically-substituted 4-amino-1,2,4-triazin-5-one compounds, herbicidal compositions containing them and their use as herbicides are disclosed.It is known that 1,2,4-triazionones, such as, for example, 4-amino-3-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine-5-one, can be used for combatting weeds, especially for selectively combatting weeds, from German Offenlegungsschrift (German Published Specification) 2,224,161. Their general herbicidal action is, however, not always entirely statisfactory, especially when low amounts and low concentrations are used.
